Interpreting differential settlement mechanisms at railway bridge–embankment transitions: a numerical case study

open access: yesCogent Engineering
Differential settlement at railway bridge–embankment transitions remains a persistent maintenance challenge due to abrupt stiffness contrasts and complex load-transfer mechanisms within the track substructure.

Monitoring and Analysis of Ground Settlement Induced by Tunnelling with Slurry Pressure-Balanced Tunnel Boring Machine

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2018
A case study of monitoring and analysis of ground settlement caused by tunnelling of stacked twin tunnels for underground metro line construction through the densely populated area using the slurry pressure-balanced TBM is presented.

Room‐Temperature Skyrmionic Synapse in 2D Ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 Operating via Collective Spin Texture Transformation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We demonstrate a neuromorphic synapse in 2D Fe3GaTe2 flakes. The device operates via a current‐driven transformation from a skyrmion‐lattice to a stripe‐domain state, yielding a linear anomalous Hall resistance response with a tunable slope to enable multiply‐accumulate operations. Simulations confirm its viability in artificial neural networks.

Technologies for Minimizing Track Degradation and Additional Dynamic Effects at Permanent Way-Railway Bridge Stiffness Transitions

open access: yesEngineering Proceedings
Railway tracks at bridge approaches experience significant vertical stiffness transitions, leading to adverse effects such as settlement and increased dynamic loads, accelerating track degradation.

Experimental and numerical settlement analysis of railway track over geogrid reinforced ballast [PDF]

open access: yesRailway Sciences
Purpose – The main objective of the present research is to investigate the benefits of using geogrid reinforcement in minimizing the rate of deterioration of ballasted rail track geometry resting on soft clay and to explore the effect of load amplitude ...

Soft Hardware, Flowing Software: Reconfigurable Microfluidics for Adaptable Chemical Computation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A reconfigurable microfluidic platform based on soft, photo‐printable, and chemically erasable hydrogel structures printed and erased in situ is used to control flow routing, mixing, chemical patterning, and even chemical computing. Using hardware to control chemical computations decouples logic function from molecular composition, demonstrated via ...

A knowledge-based prognostics framework for railway track geometry degradation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This paper proposes a paradigm shift to the problem of infrastructure asset management modelling by focusing towards forecasting the future condition of the assets instead of using empirical modelling approaches based on historical data.

A Dual‐Bioresponsive and Programmable Microneedle Matrix as a Bioinspired Coupler for Orchestrating Diabetic Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This project developed a smart bandage‐like patch (a microneedle array) for repairing diabetic bone damage. It intelligently senses signals from infection and inflammation, then releases its medicines in a specific, timed sequence: first an antibacterial agent, then an anti‐inflammatory agent, and finally growth factors.

A Reproducible and Scalable Process for High Yield Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Extracellular Vesicles Production

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Mesenchymal stem cell derived extracellular vesicles (MSC‐EVs) are a promising therapeutic tool for regenerative medicine. However, the field lacks a reproducible high‐yield production method to answer the quantities needed for clinical translation.

Evaluation of Countermeasures against Differential Settlement at Track Transitions

open access: yesQuarterly Report of RTRI, 2007
This paper describes a study which looked at the mechanism of wheel load variation that results from changes in railroad track stiffness, loose railroad ties on ballasted trackside, and other factors. Results are presented from a field inspection, a cyclic-movement loading test, and dynamic analysis performed on the ballasted trackside of the end ...
