Abstract Several lentiviral promoters or their 5’ long terminal repeats (LTRs) are unusual among eukaryotic promoters in that they contain an RNA structure in their leader sequences which is important for their function (for review see refs 1-10). This RNA element is called the trans-activation response element or TAR (11).

Indigeneity and ‘authenticity’ in African trans* activism
Sexualities, 2020Most efforts to promote gender equity in sub-Saharan Africa have been rooted in a Western heteronormative framework inherited from colonialism that aims at ‘balancing’ gender rather than deconstructing it. Dismantling this entrenched, though exogenous, binary is a daunting task, especially since, over time, it has become widely accepted as ...

Transcriptional trans-activating function of hepatitis B virus
Journal of Virology, 1987The ability of hepatitis B virus (HBV) to stimulate the expression of a cellular gene was investigated by using a transient-expression system. A plasmid in which the expression of the bacterial chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (cat) gene had been placed under the control of the DNA sequences that regulate the expression of the human beta-interferon ...

Lost in Transition?Digital trans activism on Youtube
Information, Communication & Society, 2020This article intends to contribute to a novel research area - the construction of critical transgender narratives on Youtube – examining how some Spanish trans youtubers shift the focus from the ‘fleshy metamorphosis’ [Barnett, J. T. (2015). Fleshy metamorphosis: Temporal pedagogies of transsexual counterpublics. In L. G. Spencer & J. C. Capuzza (Eds.),

Cis- and Trans-Activation of HIV
1989Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Infection via cell-free virus particles is restricted to CD4-positive cells, including macrophages, helper T — cells, and glial cells. In contrast to the specificity of binding to the cell surface receptor, HIV LTR-directed gene expression is carried

HIV-1 Tat protein trans-activates transcription in vitro
Cell, 1990Tat protein of human immunodeficiency virus 1 is a potent trans-activator of viral gene expression. We show that purified Tat protein stimulates transcription from viral promoters greater than 10-fold in vitro. A Tat protein mutant that does not trans-activate in vivo did not stimulate transcription in vitro.

A cytosolic trans-activation domain essential for ammonium uptake
Nature, 2007Polytopic membrane proteins are essential for cellular uptake and release of nutrients. To prevent toxic accumulation, rapid shut-off mechanisms are required. Here we show that the soluble cytosolic carboxy terminus of an oligomeric ammonium transporter from Arabidopsis thaliana serves as an allosteric regulator essential for function; mutations in the

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Signal Trans-Activation
2003Coordination of complex cell functions is achieved by the regulated information transfer along linear signalling pathways. It has become apparent, however, that these linear pathways are not free-standing entities but parts of larger networks. Transactivation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) represents the paradigm for communication ...
