Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.

How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Hydrogenated fat consumption affects cholesterol synthesis in moderately hypercholesterolemic women
To determine mechanisms by which hydrogenated fat influences plasma lipid levels, 14 women (65–71 yrs with LDL-C ≥ 130 mg·dl−1) consumed, for 5-week periods each, a baseline (BL) diet (39% kcal fat, 164 mg chol·1000 kcal−1) and reduced fat diets (30 ...

Toward a trans-medium vehicle with a morphing nose: design, simulation, and experimental validation
Abstract This paper presents a novel cross-medium fixed-wing vehicle with a deformable nose cone (CFV-DNC) and thoroughly investigates the impact of nose shape on the water-entry performance of the full vehicle configuration through both simulations and experiments.

Leucine‐rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a ganglioside‐binding protein
Neuronal hyperexcitability associated with a decrease/absence of the extracellular protein LGI1 has been suggested to be primarily due to the downregulation of Kv1 channel expression. The molecular mechanisms underlying this decrease have not yet been elucidated.
