Mutant screens have identified several genes in tomato, barley and Arabidopsis that are required for the function of specific plant disease resistance (R) genes. Two of these genes, NDR1 and EDS1, have recently been cloned from Arabidopsis. Most Arabidopsis R genes require NDR1 or EDS1, but not both.

Transduction of linked genetic characters of the host by bacteriophage P1

The temperate bacteriophage P1 acts as transducing agent for a large variety of genetic characteristics of strains of Escherichia coli and of Shigella dysenteriae. In E. coli strain K12, markers that behave as closely linked in sexual crosses can be transduced jointly. The frequency of joint transduction decreases sharply with decreasing linkage.
