Measurements of the modulation transfer function of image displays [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Measurements of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of image displays are often required for objective image quality assessments, but are difficult to carry out due to the need for specialized apparatus.

THE STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS OF TRANSFER RNA

open access: yesProgress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology, 1978
Publisher Summary Transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) is the term used to describe a group of low molecular weight RNA molecules that play a vital part in protein synthesis Transfer RNAs were assigned the role of adaptor molecules by Hoagland et al.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Tabla: A Proof-of-Concept Auscultatory Percussion Device for Low-Cost Pneumonia Detection

open access: yesSensors, 2018
Pneumonia causes the deaths of over a million people worldwide each year, with most occurring in countries with limited access to expensive but effective diagnostic methods, e.g., chest X-rays.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Computation of minimal periodic realizations of transfer-function matrices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We present a numerical approach to compute a minimal periodic state-space realization of a transfer-function matrix corresponding to a lifted state-space representation.

Coherent Transfer Function Of A Hololens/Parabolic Optical Fiber System [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
© Spie-Soc Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.A new integral equation is presented and solved by a matrix method based on iterative procedures to obtain information about the transmission and reflection of light (scalar field) in inhomogeneous media.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
