Transferrin and transferrin receptors update

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2019
In vertebrates, transferrin (Tf) safely delivers iron through circulation to cells. Tf-bound iron is incorporated through Tf receptor (TfR) 1-mediated endocytosis. TfR1 can mediate cellular uptake of both Tf and H-ferritin, an iron storage protein. New World arenaviruses, which cause hemorrhagic fever, and Plasmodium vivax use TfR1 for entry into host ...

Transferrin/transferrin receptor‐mediated drug delivery

Medicinal Research Reviews, 2002
AbstractSince transferrin was discovered more than half a century ago, a considerable effort has been made towards understanding tranferrin‐mediated iron uptake. However, it was not until recently with the identification and characterization of several new genes related to iron homeostasis, such as the hemochromatosis protein HFE and the iron ...

Function of Transferrin

Nature, 1968
Recent work on the structure and function of transferrin indicates that it is not only an inert carrier of iron but that it has a complex function in the absorption and distribution of iron in the body.

Human Transferrin Polymorphism

Human Heredity, 1987
The application of isoelectric focussing (IEF) has revealed a large amount of heterogeneity in the human transferrin (TF) system and has enhanced its potential value in anthropological and genetic studies. The average heterozygosity has been elevated from 0.05, observed by conventional methods of electrophoresis, to 0.29 detected by IEF.

Transferrins of Cercopithecinae

Folia Primatologica, 1970
The transferrin phenotypes of 11 species of Cercopithecinae were determined by electrophoresis of plasma, followed by autoradiography. Sialic acid content of transferrins was determined by electrophoresis and autoradiography of enzymatically treated plasma. Transferrin polymorphisms were found in three species.

Serum Transferrin Receptor

Annual Review of Medicine, 1993
The transferrin receptor plays a critical role in iron metabolism by precisely contrOlling the flow of transferrin iron into body cells. A soluble truncated form of the receptor can be detected in human serum using sensitive immunoassays, and the initial clinical experience with this new measurement indicates that it reflects the total body mass of ...

[Transferrins].

Glas. Srpska akademija nauka i umetnosti. Odeljenje medicinskih nauka, 1993
The objective of this paper was to summarize the physical and chemical knowledge of the transferrin molecule. The ample data concerning transferrin were presented. Considerable attention was given to the microheterogeneity of the transferrin molecule--the polymorphism, differences of the binding site for iron and possible donation of iron to the cell ...

Transferrin receptor 1

The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2004
With the discovery that transferrin serves as the iron source for hemoglobin-synthesizing immature red blood cells came the demonstration that a cell surface receptor, now known as transferrin receptor 1, is required for iron delivery from transferrin to cells.
