Dynamic criticality at the jamming transition [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2013
We characterize vibrational motion occurring at low temperatures in dense suspensions of soft repulsive spheres over a broad range of volume fractions encompassing the jamming transition at (T = 0, φ = φJ). We find that characteristic time and length scales of thermal vibrations obey critical scaling in the vicinity of the jamming transition.

Revealing the structure of land plant photosystem II: the journey from negative‐stain EM to cryo‐EM

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Advances in cryo‐EM have revealed the detailed structure of Photosystem II, a key protein complex driving photosynthesis. This review traces the journey from early low‐resolution images to high‐resolution models, highlighting how these discoveries deepen our understanding of light harvesting and energy conversion in plants.

Mechanism of Unstable Material Removal Modes in Micro Cutting of Silicon Carbide

open access: yesMicromachines, 2019
This study conducts large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of micro cutting of single crystal 6H silicon carbide (SiC) with up to 19 million atoms to investigate the mechanism of unstable material removal modes within the transitional range of ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Influence of the Reynolds Number on the Aerodynamic Performance of a Small Rotor

open access: yesAerospace, 2023
The use of small rotors has increased due their applications in drones and UAVs. In order to improve the global performance of these aerial vehicles, it is necessary to understand the aerodynamics of small rotors, since this is related to the global ...

Transitions in dynamic point labeling

open access: yesCartography and Geographic Information Science
The labeling of point features on a map is a well-studied topic. In a static setting, the goal is to find a non-overlapping label placement for (a subset of) point features. In a dynamic setting, the set of point features and their corresponding labels change, and the labeling has to adapt to such changes.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

The Location Dynamics of Firms in Transitional Shanghai, 1978-2005 [PDF]

open access: yesUrbani Izziv, 2012
China’s economic reform started in 1978 has brought in profound changes to firms by transforming the state-owned-enterprises and by encouraging the growth of the non-state sector business.
