It is more than 50 years since the concept of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) was first introduced as a percutaneous procedure for patients with refractory variceal bleeding and ascites. TIPS has become widely accepted in the management of complications of portal hypertension because it is less invasive than surgery.
