Abstract An analysis of the conceptual framework for analysing the translation technique of the Old Latin Gospels. The terminology found in Cicero, Augustine, and Jerome is summarized, along with modern terms such as ’formal equivalence’ and ’dynamic equivalence’. An approach is adopted based on modern language‐contact studies.
