Imitation as a Mechanism of Cultural Transmission

Artificial Life, 2010
We study the effects of an imitation mechanism on a population of animats capable of individual ontogenetic learning. An urge to imitate others augments a network-based reinforcement learning strategy used in the control system of the animats. We test populations of animats with imitation against populations without for their ability to find, and ...

Mechanical transmission of malaria

Experimental Parasitology, 1963
Abstract In a series of experiments on mechanical transmission of malarial parasites, using Aedes aegypti as the transmitting agent of Plasmodium gallinaceum in chicks, only one case of positive infection was achieved. When Anopheles stephensi was used to transmit P. berghei in mice, all results were negative.

Mechanisms of synaptic transmission in the retina

Vision Research, 1983
This paper reviews the mechanisms of transmitter release, the kinetics of synaptic transfer, the mechanisms for the production of conductance changes by transmitters, and the nature of the conductance changes at synapses in vertebrate retina. A method for the culturing of adult retinal cells is described, together with preliminary experiments on the ...

The Mechanism of Synaptic Transmission

1961
In the twenty five years since my previous review was published in the Ergebnisse der Physiologie (Eccles 1936), the subject of synaptic transmission has been transformed. The enormous advances in knowledge and understanding have been brought about largely as a result of the microtechniques: electron-microscopy; electrical investigations by ...

THE MECHANISM OF TRANSMISSION OF THE TRANSMISSIBLE VENEREAL TUMOUR OF THE DOG

Transplantation, 1974
Summary The coital mode of transmission of the transmissible veneral tumour (TVT) of the dog is well established, but the mechanism of transmission of this neoplasm is uncertain. Immunological studies were carried out in order to investigate this problem.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies: transmission, mechanism of disease, and persistence

Current Opinion in Microbiology, 1998
Prion protein is central to the control of development of all transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Controversy exists as to whether the protein itself is responsible for disease manifestation, in one of perhaps several isoforms, or whether an additional informational molecule must be involved in conjunction with the protein.

Mechanisms of Hantavirus Transmission in Oligoryzomys longicaudatus

EcoHealth, 2019
The cricetid rodent Oligoryzomys longicaudatus is the species host of Andes virus (ANDV) which causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in southern Argentina and Chile. Population density, behavioral interactions, and spacing patterns are factors that affect viral transmission among wild rodents.

Mechanical Transmission of Plant Viruses

1957
Publisher Summary This chapter summarizes information concerning the relative efficiency of different mechanical methods in use and the factors affecting the success of mechanical inoculations. The concern of this review is primarily with the initiation of the infection process rather than with the later invasiveness of the virus.
