UNIQUENESS IN CONTEXT

open access: yesZygon, 2008
Wentzel van Huyssteen's Gifford Lectures, published as Alone in the World? Human Uniqueness in Science and Theology, accomplish critical and constructive thinking about interdisciplinary reflection on science and religion and about the meaning of human ...

Vector transversals

open access: yesJournal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 1982
AbstractThe max-flow min-cut theorem is used to give a necessary and sufficient condition for one or two finite families of finite non-negative vectors to have a (common) vector transversal. The duality theorem of linear programming is then used to prove the polymatroid intersection theorem for any finite number of polymatroids, which in turn is used ...

Productivity‐Driven Optimization of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Parameters for IN718 Superalloy: Process Control, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates how optimizing laser power, scanning speed, and hatching distance in laser powder bed fusion can boost the productivity of Inconel 718 manufacturing by up to 29% while maintaining mechanical integrity. The work delivers a validated process window and cost–time analysis, offering industry‐ready guidelines for efficient additive ...

A Note on Transversality Conditions [PDF]

open access: yes
We derive a new transversality condition (which we prove to be necessary) for a class of infinite horizon optimal control problems.Transversality condition, Optimal control ...

PRIMATES, HOMINIDS, AND HUMANS—FROM SPECIES SPECIFICITY TO HUMAN UNIQUENESS? A RESPONSE TO BARBARA J. KING, GREGORY R. PETERSON, WESLEY J. WILDMAN, AND NANCY R. HOWELL

open access: yesZygon, 2008
In this response to essays by Barbara J. King, Gregory R. Peterson, Wesley J. Wildman, and Nancy R. Howell, I present arguments to counter some of the exciting and challenging questions from my colleagues.

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Necessity of the Transversality Condition for Stochastic Models with Bounded or CRRA Utility [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper shows that the standard transversality condition (STVC) is nec-essary for optimality in stochastic models with bounded or constant-relative-risk- aversion (CRRA) utility under fairly general conditions.

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

A generalization of Thom’s transversality theorem [PDF]

open access: yes, 1973
summary:We prove a generalization of Thom’s transversality theorem. It gives conditions under which the jet map $f_*|_Y\colon Y\subseteq J^r(D,M)\rightarrow J^r(D,N)$ is generically (for $f\colon M\rightarrow N$) transverse to a submanifold $Z\subseteq J^
