Rapid tremor migration and pore-pressure waves in subduction zones [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Rapid tremor migration in subduction zones has been associated with aseismic, shear strain at the plate interface. Here, the authors develop a physical model that shows that pore-pressure waves at the plate interface are likely to generate secondary slip

Migration of Deep Low‐Frequency Tremor Triggered by Teleseismic Earthquakes in the Southwest Japan Subduction Zone [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
Deep low‐frequency tremor triggered by teleseismic surface waves is concentrated in several locations along the ambient tremor source region in the Nankai subduction zone, southwest Japan.

Depth Migration of Seismovolcanic Tremor Sources Below the Klyuchevskoy Volcanic Group (Kamchatka) Determined From a Network‐Based Analysis [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2019
We present a method for automatic location of dominant sources of seismovolcanic tremor in 3‐D, based on the spatial coherence of the continuously recorded wavefield at a seismic network.

Migration properties of non‐volcanic tremor in Shikoku, southwest Japan [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2011
Based on the precise locations of deep non‐volcanic tremor in southwest Japan, which show a depth‐dependent behavior, we clarified characteristic properties of tremor migration. Major tremor swarms are mainly initiated at deep levels of the tremor zone, corresponding to areas of frequent minor tremor, and migrate up‐dip along the subduction interface ...

Migration of tremor locations before the 2008 eruption of Meakandake Volcano, Hokkaido, Japan [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2012
Abstract We estimate the locations of three tremor sequences, denoted A, B, and C, that occurred before the 2008 eruption at Meakandake volcano, eastern Hokkaido, Japan, using the spatial distribution of seismic amplitudes of volcanic tremor. Although we used only five seismic stations, we could estimate the locations of three tremor sequences.

Rapid Tremor Migration During Few Minute‐Long Slow Earthquakes in Cascadia

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2023
Slow earthquakes are now commonly found to display a wide range of durations, moments, and slip and propagation speeds. But not all types of slow earthquakes have been examined in detail. Here we probe tremor bursts with durations between 1 and 30 minutes, which are likely driven by few minute-long bursts of aseismic slip.

Short‐term and long‐term tremor migration patterns of the Cascadia 2004 tremor and slow slip episode using small aperture seismic arrays [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 2010
Tectonic tremor has been recorded at many subduction zones, including the Nankai, Cascadia, Mexican, and Alaskan subduction zones. This study, the first to use small aperture seismic arrays to track tremor, deployed three small aperture seismic arrays along the Cascadia subduction zone during a tremor and slow slip episode in July 2004.

Depth‐dependent mode of tremor migration beneath Kii Peninsula, Nankai subduction zone [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2012
We investigated the migration mode of deep non‐volcanic tremor activity beneath Kii Peninsula, southwest Japan. Major tremor episodes are characterized by long‐term migration with a velocity of about 10 km/day, propagating along the strike of the subducting plate.

Evidence for Stress Diffusion and Along‐Strike Segmentation in Cascadia Tremor Migrations Lasting Minutes to Weeks

open access: yesAGU Advances
The properties and rheology of subduction zones have been intensively studied to forecast potential megathrust earthquake scenarios. However, in Cascadia, the absence of recent megathrust events limits available seismic evidence.

Migration of low‐frequency tremors revealed from multiple‐array analyses in western Shikoku, Japan [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 2010
Multiple‐array observation above a belt‐like tremor zone was conducted to investigate the detailed location and migration of tremor activity in western Shikoku, Japan. In March 2007, an episodic tremor and slip event occurred, and highly coherent waveforms were recorded at three arrays.
