Temporal Bone Treponemes

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1969
THIS IS the first report of the persistence of spirochetes in the temporal bone in congenital syphilitic deafness despite penicillin therapy. Report of a Case This case was previously reported in detail by Karmody and Schuknecht 1 to emphasize the histopathological changes in the temporal bone in congenital syphilis. The purpose of this communication

Uveitis and Intraocular Treponemes

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1970
A study of aqueous humor specimens from 50 patients with active uveitis of undetermined etiology revealed that six of these patients had organisms in their aqueous which were morphologically indistinguishable from Treponema pallidum . The organisms from five of these six reacted specifically with rabbit anti-T pallidum globulin.

Formation of multiple treponemes

Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, 1994
The formation of pseudomulticellular treponemes was analyzed using different electron microscopical methods such as thin sectioning, freeze fracturing and scanning electron microscopy. The development of spherical bodies is preceded by the formation of unseparated helical forms and plait-like structures.

New species of rumen treponemes

Folia Microbiologica, 2006
Three strains of rumen treponemes were isolated and partially characterized. The strains differed significantly one from another in morphology, fermentation characteristics and plasmid profiles. Their genetic variability was assayed using DNA-based molecular approaches. Easily differentiated ARDRA (amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis) patterns

Lipid catabolism of cultivated treponemes

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1982
Treponema require long-chain fatty acids for growth in vitro. Serum, added to culture media, provides a source of long-chain fatty acids. These fatty acids, however, are esterified to triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol. In this study, the major pathways of complex lipid catabolism in T. phagedenis, T. denticola, T. refringens, T.
