Multi-domain O-GlcNAcase structures reveal allosteric regulatory mechanisms [PDF]
Nucleocytoplasmic protein O-GlcNAcylation is a dynamic modification catalysed by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) and reversed by O-GlcNAc hydrolase (OGA), whose activities are regulated through largely unknown O-GlcNAc-dependent feedback mechanisms.

The Mesenchyme-Like Layer of the Fiber Cells of Trichoplax adhaerens (Placozoa), a Syncytium
Abstract The fiber cells of the middle layer of Trichoplax adhaerens are interconnected by slender extensions. Newly formed connections after mechanical disruption of the tissue studied in ultrathin sections revealed cytoplasmic continuity between the cell bodies, suggesting a syncytial organisation of the fiber cell layer.

Abstract In the primitive metazoan, Trichoplax adhaerens, the fiber cells are responsible for the change of shape. Electron microscopy reveals connections between protoplasmic strands of neighbouring cells marked by an osmiophilic disc-like structure. Possible functions are discussed.

Trichoplax adhaerens F. E. Schulze (Placozoa): The Formation of Swarmers
Abstract Flageilated swarmers representing an alternative mode of asexual reproduction are budded off as hollow spheres at the dorsal surface. They are covered by cells of the dorsal epithelium and the interior cavity is lined by ventral epithelium. Fiber cells are in the interspace.

Evolution of iGluR ligand specificity, polyamine regulation, and ion selectivity inferred from a placozoan epsilon receptor [PDF]
Epsilon ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are a recently defined clade of neurotransmitter receptors that are found in all major metazoan lineages that are distinct from α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA), kainate, delta ...

Mitochondrial genome of Trichoplax adhaerens supports placozoa as the basal lower metazoan phylum. [PDF]
Mitochondrial genomes of multicellular animals are typically 15- to 24-kb circular molecules that encode a nearly identical set of 12–14 proteins for oxidative phosphorylation and 24–25 structural RNAs (16S rRNA, 12S rRNA, and tRNAs). These genomes lack significant intragenic spacers and are generally without introns.

Placozoan secretory cell types implicated in feeding, innate immunity and regulation of behavior. [PDF]
Placozoa are millimeter-sized, flat, irregularly shaped ciliated animals that crawl on surfaces in warm oceans feeding on biofilms, which they digest externally. They stand out from other animals due to their simple body plans.

Abstract In contrast with the outmost uniform aspect of Trichoplax there is a clear cut differentiation between marginal and central cell territories. Dissection and transplantation as well as vital staining show that the marginal material is restricted to a seam approximately 20 μm in width, surrounding the much larger mass of central ...

Simple telomeres in a simple animal: absence of subtelomeric repeat regions in the placozoan Trichoplax adhaerens. [PDF]
AbstractSimple telomeres were identified in the genome assembly of the basal placozoan animal Trichoplax adhaerens. They have 1–2 kb of TTAGGG telomeric repeats, which are preceded by a subtelomeric region of 1.5–13 kb. Unlike subtelomeric regions in most animals examined, these subtelomeric regions are unique to each telomere.

Transepithelial Cytophagy by Trichoplax adhaerens F. E. Schulze (Placozoa) Feeding on Yeast
After accidental observations of unicellular algae trapped in the intermediate layer of Trichoplax, dead yeast cells were offered systematically as a food. Some of them could be found several hours later engulfed by the big tetraploid fibre cells closely beneath the dorsal epithelium of the animal.
