Climatic change drives dynamic source-sink relationships in marine species with high dispersal potential. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2021
Using a multidisciplinary approach combining genetic data (SNPs) with individual‐based modelling, we show that patterns of connectivity between rock lobsters Jasus tristani and Jasus paulensis changed over time in accordance with climatic fluctuations. Historical connectivity between the ocean basis was more influenced by the Agulhas Leakage (from the ...

Updated 2023 Tristan da Cunha rock lobster assessment

open access: yes, 2023
This paper provides details of an updated 2020 assessment of the rock lobster resource at the island of Tristan da Cunha, which takes account of the most recent data available. This assessment takes explicit account of the separate data available from the powerboats, the Edinburgh/Geo Searcher and the annual biomass surveys.

Influence of offshore oil and gas structures on seascape ecological connectivity

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 28, Issue 11, Page 3515-3536, June 2022., 2022
Offshore platforms and related fixed structures supporting the oil and gas (O&G) industry are prevalent in all oceans. We review current knowledge on the role of O&G infrastructure in maintaining, altering or enhancing ecological seascape connectivity. There is a paucity of studies assessing connectivity and O&G structures.

Diversity and ecology of Radiolaria in modern oceans

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 24, Issue 5, Page 2179-2200, May 2022., 2022
Summary Among the many inhabitants of planktonic communities, several lineages have biomineralized intricate skeletons. These have existed for millions of years and include the Radiolaria, a group of marine protists, many of which bear delicate mineral skeletons of different natures.

Consistent offshore artificial light at night near the last breeding colony of a critically endangered seabird

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 3, Issue 9, September 2021., 2021
Using monitoring of offshore ALAN dynamics, Whenua Hou Diving‐petrel behavior, and a Bayesian framework, we estimated that birds were exposed to 28.9 (19.7–39.7) spotlights per breeding period, which could be detrimental to this critically endangered species.

Sustainable large‐scale production of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) seed for ecological restoration and aquaculture: a review

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 13, Issue 3, Page 1423-1468, June 2021., 2021
Abstract The conservation and active restoration of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) populations are a major focus of ecological restoration efforts to take advantage of the wide‐ranging ecosystem functions and services this species provides. Accordingly, additional and new demands for seed oysters have arisen.

Tristan rock lobster OMP development: some initial notes

open access: yes, 2022
Operating models provide numbers-at-age (and length) for the Trsitan rock lobster for the start of the 2013/14 season. Model projections thus start at this point, with the first Tristan rock lobster catch set by the OMP being for the 2013/14 season.
