The relationship between the microwave radiometer and the precipitation radar on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission TRMM satellite is inherently complementary. Neither sensor by itself would be adequate to achieve the TRMM objectives but the match between the strengths and weaknesses of each sensor results in an extremely powerful payload.

On the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) [PDF]
Recognizing the importance of rain in the tropics and the accompanying latent heat release, NASA for the U.S. and NASDA for Japan have partnered in the design, construction and flight of an Earth Probe satellite to measure tropical rainfall and calculate the associated heating. Primary mission goals are: 1) the understanding of crucial links in climate

This paper describes the Met Office's new lightning location system LEELA. A brief overview of the upgraded hardware and geolocation algorithms is given. LEELA has improved lightning detection capabilities, especially at night. When comparing LEELA to the previous ATDnet system against ground truths LEELA has 100% storm detection efficiency within 5 km

Rare Tropical Cyclones: Tropical Cyclone Hidaya, A High‐Impact Low‐Latitude Event
The unusual development and landfall of Tropical Cyclone Hidaya in May 2024 in Tanzania was at an exceptionally low latitude. Although tropical cyclones rarely form or persist this close to the equator due to weak planetary vorticity, Hidaya was a rare event that challenges established dynamical constraints on tropical cyclone activity.
