Tropoelastin

The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2009
Tropoelastin is a 60-72 kDa alternatively spliced extracellular matrix protein and a key component of elastic fibres. It is found in all vertebrates except for cyclostomes. Secreted tropoelastin is tethered to the cell surface, where it aggregates into organised spheres for cross-linking and incorporation into growing elastic fibres.

Coacervation of tropoelastin

Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2011
The coacervation of tropoelastin represents the first major stage of elastic fiber assembly. The process has been modeled in vitro by numerous studies, initially with mixtures of solubilized elastin, and subsequently with synthetic elastin peptides that represent hydrophobic repeat units, isolated hydrophobic domains, segments of alternating ...

Fibrillation of tropoelastin induced by proteoglycan [PDF]

open access: possibleExperientia, 1976
Electrostatic interaction between tropoelastin, the native precursor of elastin, and proteoglycan results in tropoelastin fibrillation. The finding suggests a possible involvement of proteoglycans in elastogenesis.

Properties of chick tropoelastin

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure, 1973
Abstract 1. 1. Tropoelastin was purified from the aortas of copper-deficient chicks. The amino acid composition of this protein is very similar to that previously described for porcine tropoelastin. The protein contains more than 40 residues of lysine per thousand total residues and no desmosine or isodesmosine. 2. 2.

Degradation of tropoelastin by proteases

Analytical Biochemistry, 1978
Abstract A simple assay is described which is capable of detecting single breaks in purified radioactively labeled tropoelastin after incubation with dilute solutions of proteases. Using this assay we show that tropoelastin is rapidly cleaved by a variety of proteases, including leukocyte and pancreatic clastase, at physiologic pH and ionic strength.
