Maintenance of Moisture Anomalies Across Synoptic and Intraseasonal Timescales Over the Indo‐Pacific Warm Pool

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Moisture variability plays a fundamental role in regulating tropical precipitation; however, the mechanisms that sustain moisture anomalies across different timescales remain unclear. This study examines how moisture anomalies are regulated over the Indo‐Pacific warm pool using the column‐integrated moist static energy (CMSE) budget.

Initial Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) Imaging Analyses: Gravity Wave Sources, Temperatures, Pseudomomentum Fluxes, and Horizontal Wavenumber Spectra at the OH Layer

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract The NASA Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) employs an OH imager that began measurements aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on 22 November 2023. The motivation for AWE was to quantify gravity wave (GW) responses to diverse sources and their influences extending into the mesosphere and higher altitudes.

Lightning Outbreaks at the Mature Stage of Tropical Cyclone: Case Study for Hurricane Dorian (2019)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract The relationship between tropical cyclone (TC) lightning activity and intensity change has been examined for nearly 30 years, yet a clear consensus remains elusive, reflecting the complexity of the processes governing TC lightning. This study investigates the physical mechanisms that triggered inner‐core lightning outbreaks during the mature ...

Impact of the AMOC Weakening on Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere Warming Over the Extratropical North Pacific

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a key regulator of the Earth's climate. Here using water hosing experiments with a coupled climate model, we show that a weakened AMOC leads to a significant boreal winter upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS) warming over the extratropical North Pacific (ENP).

Pseudo‐Radar Reflectivity by Applying U‐Net Models to Global Passive Microwave Brightness Temperatures

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Spaceborne radar systems such as the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM)'s core satellite Dual‐frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) provide global insight into precipitation structure, storm morphology, and hydrological cycles. However, their limited spatial and temporal sampling and high cost constrain their ability to continuously ...

When Thunderstorms Reach the Stratosphere: Why Storm Structure May Matter for Climate

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Deep convection that overshoots the tropopause provides one of the fastest pathways for exchanging air between the troposphere and the stratosphere. Using extensive in situ observations from the dynamics and chemistry of the summer stratosphere (DCOTSS) campaign, Shepherd et al.
