A True Triaxial Testing Cell

1988
Results of both drained and undrained triaxial tests performed with a true triaxial cell on both natural and artificial clays are presented and discussed. The true triaxial apparatus, which has been used for about 20 years, is fully described. The apparatus has recently been modified to improve the measurement of lateral deformations.

A rock test cell with true triaxial capability

Geotechnical & Geological Engineering, 1999
Conventional so-called triaxial test cells apply the axial stress to a cylindrical sample using steel platens, with the confining stress developed via an annulus of hydraulic fluid retained by a liner in a pressure cell. This does not allow differentiation between the two principal stresses around the core and inhibits the realism with which the rocks ...

Triaxial and True Triaxial Testing of Preserved and Partially Saturated Shale

Proceedings, 2016
Samples of a clay-rich shale have been subjected to standard and true triaxial stress conditions to investigate the impact of the intermediate principal stress on shale strength and elastic stiffness. In addition, samples were immersed in different relative humidity environments to evaluate the impact of changing water saturation on rock properties ...

Analysis of Shear Banding in True Triaxial Tests on Sand

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2001
A series of true triaxial tests have been performed on rectangular prismatic specimens of Santa Monica Beach sand at three different relative densities to study the occurrence of failure, mechanism...

Simulation of triaxial and true triaxial tests on natural and reconstituted Pisa clay

Géotechnique, 2002
A kinematic hardening/bounding surface plasticity model is used to reproduce the experimental behaviour of the natural soft clay found at Pisa. The model accounts for progressive loss of structure with plastic strains, and can be made to degenerate into a structureless state. Model parameters are calibrated on drained triaxial probing tests on natural

True Triaxial Tests on Natural Shanghai Clay

2018
Drained true triaxial tests on undisturbed and remolded Shanghai silty clay were carried out to investigate the influence of intermediate principle stress on the strength and deformation of natural clay. Test results show that not only the shear strength, but also the volume change of Shanghai clay decreases with the increase of Lode angle θ. The shear

Results of true triaxial strength tests on rock salt

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract Knowledge of the thermomechanical properties of rock salt is important for the dimensioning of a permanent repository for radioactive wastes in a salt dome and for the necessary safety analysis, as well as for the design of mines and caverns.

True triaxial hydraulic fracturing test and numerical simulation of limestone

Journal of Central South University, 2020
Hydraulic fracturing, as a key technology of deep energy exploitation, accelerates the rapid development of the modern petroleum industry. To study the mechanisms of hydraulic fracture propagation and rock failure mode of the vertical well hydraulic fracturing, the true triaxial hydraulic fracturing test and numerical simulation are carried out, and ...

Behavior of EPS geofoam in true triaxial compression tests

Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 2008
Abstract This paper investigates the behavior of EPS geofoam in a true triaxial apparatus using 70 mm×70 mm×140 mm prismatic brick-shaped specimens. The specimens are subjected to different stress paths in the deviator ( π ) plane by means of stress-controlled loading, in which the axial stress is imposed at a rate of 75 kPa/min in the major ...

Characterization of Asphalt Concrete by Multi-Stage True Triaxial Testing

Journal of ASTM International, 2005
The feasibility of an existing servo-controlled true triaxial (cubical) apparatus for evaluating the mechanical response of nominal 4-in. cubical specimens of asphalt concrete (AC) under multi-axial stress states has been investigated. The apparatus allows the testing of specimens along a wide range of stress paths and stress levels that are not ...
