Artificial intelligence‐powered microscopy: Transforming the landscape of parasitology

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, Volume 301, Issue 2, Page 280-329, February 2026.
Abstract Microscopy and image analysis play a vital role in parasitology research; they are critical for identifying parasitic organisms and elucidating their complex life cycles. Despite major advancements in imaging and analysis, several challenges remain. These include the integration of interdisciplinary data; information derived from various model

Key Regulators of Parasite Biology Viewed Through a Post‐Translational Modification Repertoire

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, Volume 25, Issue 21-22, Page 253-276, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Parasites are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in both humans and animals, imposing substantial socioeconomic burdens worldwide. Controlling parasitic diseases has become one of the key issues in achieving “One Health”. Most parasites have sophisticated life cycles exhibiting progressive developmental stages, morphologies, and ...

Long‐proboscid horseflies (Philoliche: Tabanidae) as pollinators of co‐adapted plants in Africa and Asia

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 149, Issue 4, Page 466-477, May 2025.
Abstract Elongated nectar‐feeding mouthparts have evolved in several fly families, most notably Nemestrinidae, Bombyliidae and Tabanidae. Plants pollinated by these “long‐proboscid flies” tend to have relatively specialized pollination systems. In this review, I focus on the blood‐ and nectar‐feeding horsefly genus Philoliche (Tabanidae: Pangoniinae ...

Changes of reproductive indices of the testis due to Trypanosoma evansi infection in dromedary bulls (Camelus dromedarius): Semen picture, hormonal profile, histopathology, oxidative parameters, and hematobiochemical profile

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Veterinary and Animal Research, 2020
Objective: IThis study was designed for the investigation of the effect of infection by Trypanosoma evansi on the changes of reproductive indices of the testis, causing reproductive failure in dromedary bulls (Camelus dromedarius). Materials and methods:

Investigation of Novel Isatinylhydantoin Derivatives as Potential Anti‐Kinetoplastid Agents

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 20, Issue 1, January 2, 2025.
A series of isatinylhydantoin derivatives were synthesized and investigated for antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activities in vitro and in vivo. The derivative 5 was identified with higher leishmanicidal activity than the clinical drug amphotericin B while 4b was uncovered as in vitro trypanocidal hit against T. congolense parasite.

Exploration of Novel “Ferroxazide/Ferrazone” Derivatives as Antitrypanosomatid Agents: Design, Synthesis, and Biological Efficacy

open access: yesApplied Organometallic Chemistry, Volume 39, Issue 1, January 2025.
A series of novel ferrocene derivatives, mimics of the clinical antibiotics, nifuroxazide and nitrofurazone, termed ferroxazides and ferrazones, respectively, were synthesized and evaluated for antitrypanosomatid activities. The ferroxazide 15 bearing dimethylamino moiety was identified in vitro as hit against Trypanosoma congolense strain but ...

Outcomes of Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma evansi infections on health of Southern coati (Nasua nasua), crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), and ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) in the Brazilian Pantanal. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
The occurrence of Trypanosoma spp. in wild carnivore populations has been intensively investigated during the last decades. However, the impact of these parasites on the health of free-living infected animals has been largely neglected.
