We worked with citizen scientists to monitor the productivity of the widely distributed summer truffle (Tuber aestivum) over eight years. We found that hot, dry summers substantially reduce truffle yields. Populations from the center of the species' range cannot tolerate conditions experienced by populations at the hotter extremes, suggesting local ...

‘Can't see the forest for the trees’: The importance of fungi in the context of UK tree planting
Tree planting now forms a major part of the UK climate mitigation strategy, with targets to increase the forest cover from the current 13% to 17%–20% by 2050. We highlight four key reasons why fungi should be considered in tree planting strategies, with a following seven policy recommendations to maximise the carbon sequestration and biodiversity ...

Summary The development of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) symbioses between soil fungi and tree roots requires modification of root cell walls. The pectin‐mediated adhesion between adjacent root cells loosens to accommodate fungal hyphae in the Hartig net, facilitating nutrient exchange between partners.

Mulch removal time did not have significant effects on Tuber melanosporum mycelium biomass
Aim of study: We aimed to i) evaluate the effects of mulching on Tuber melanosporum mycelium biomass and seedling growth (i.e. root collar diameter and seedling height) and ii) unravel the relationship between growth in root collar diameter and mycelium ...

Methods used for extraction of plant volatiles have potential to preserve truffle aroma: A review
Abstract Truffles are considered one of the world's most highly prized foods mainly due to their desirable organoleptic properties and rarity. However, truffles are seasonal (harvested mostly in winter from June to August in the Southern Hemisphere and from December to February in the Northern Hemisphere) and extremely perishable.
