LATERAL SPREADING MECHANISM OF A TURBULENT SPOT AND A TURBULENT WEDGE
Proceeding of Ninth International Symposium on Turbulence and Shear Flow Phenomena, 2015We examine the spreading of turbulent spots and wedges into a surrounding laminar Blasius boundary layer. The spreading is not due to the lateral propagation of turbulent eddies but rather to a developing disturbance in the surrounding spanwise vorticity of the laminar boundary layer. We concentrate on the mechanisms for generating streamwise vorticity.

Spreading of turbulence in plane Couette flow
Physical Review E, 2016We investigate the growth in the spanwise direction of turbulent spots invading a laminar flow in a plane Couette flow. Direct numerical simulation is used to track the nucleation of streaks during the spot growth. Experiment and direct numerical simulation allow us to study the velocity of the spot fronts and of the vortices observed at the spots ...

Spreading of a Turbulent Disturbance
AIAA Journal, 1972The presented paper shows the effect of local Mach number on the turbulent disturbance spreading angle relative to the wall and on lateral disturbance spreading angles. Almost all the disturbances angles relative to the wall were determined from investigations where hot-wire contours or hot-film surveys of a 'laminar' boundary layer were obtained ...

Beam Spreading in a Turbulent Medium
Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1972The Kolmogorov spectrum with its associated structure functions is generally used to study wave propagation in turbulent media. It is known, however, that this spectrum does not accurately represent the real atmosphere outside the inertial range. In this paper, the broadening of a focused gaussian beam is calculated, using instead a modified von Karman

Concurrent turbulent flame spread
Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1991The rate of flame spread over the surface of thick PMMA sheets has been measured as a function of the velocity and turbulence intensity of a forced air flow concurrent with the direction of flame propagation. It is shown that the flow turbulence has a strong influence on the flame spread process.

Hydrodynamics of the turbulent point-spread function
Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2013We derive hydrodynamic equations for the point-spread function of an imaging system looking through atmospheric turbulence at an incoherent object. These are derived from the hydrodynamics of the index of refraction of the air. We use the path integral representation of the paraxial approximation for wave propagation through turbulence.
