Investigation of Turbulent Wedge Spreading Mechanism with Comparison to Turbulent Spots
50th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2012We investigate the physics of turbulent wedge spreading in a nominally zero pressure gradient boundary layer over a flat wall using incompressible spectral DNS and an immersed boundary method. Turbulent wedges are simulated over both physical and unphysical surfaces to identify the important factors leading to wedge spreading and turbulence ...

Flame spread in an opposed turbulent flow
Combustion and Flame, 1990Abstract An experimental study is presented of the influence of turbulence on the spread of flames over the surface of a solid combustible in a gas flow opposing the direction of flame propagation. The flow velocity and its turbulent intensity are varied to observe their effects on the flame spread rate over thick PMMA and thin filter paper sheets ...

Turbulence spreading in reversed shear plasmas
Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2006Turbulence spreading in reversed shear plasmas is investigated using a simple, multi-fluid model of ITG turbulence in toroidal geometry. The temperature profile modification is accompanied by avalanche processes. In addition, it is found that the turbulence spreads inwards and outwards, owing to the nonlinear interactions of turbulence. Analysis of the

Spreading of Turbulent Round Jet in Coflow
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1999The scalar concentration and velocity field of an axisymmetric turbulent jet in a coflow are measured using laser-induced fluorescence and laser Doppler anemometry techniques. Both the time-averaged and turbulence data suggest the use of the top-hat average velocity as the characteristic velocity in this shear flow.

Investigation of Turbulent Spot Spreading Mechanism
48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2010We investigate the physics of turbulent spots spreading in a nominally zero pressure gradient boundary layer over surface textures using incompressible spectral DNS and an immersed boundary method. Turbulent spots are simulated over both physical and unphysical surface textures to identify important factors of spot spreading.

Turbulence Spreading of Doppler Spectrum
Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1973Abstract Observations obtained by means of a zenith pointing, 3-cm pulsed-Doppler radar were used to estimate the turbulence spreading of the Doppler spectrum. This was done by comparing estimates of updraft velocity made by two schemes. One of them is independent of turbulence spreading effects providing they affect both tails of the spectrum.

The Turbulent Spread of A Falling Cluster
1959The paper considers the expansion of a cluster of particles under the action of isotropic homogeneous turbulence when the terminal velocity of the particles is great enough for the effect of Lagrangian decay of the eddies on the expansion of the cluster to be neglected, whilst small enough for the particles' response to the velocity fluctuations ...

Spread of a heated plane turbulent jet
The Physics of Fluids, 1975A heated two-dimensional turbulent jet flow has been studied experimentally using conditional sampling techniques. The aim of the investigation was to establish the details of the spread of the temperature and velocity fields. Results confirmed previous observations showing that the conventionally measured mean temperature profile was wider than the ...

Turbulence spreading in gyro-kinetic theory
Nuclear Fusion, 2015Abstract In this letter a new operative definition for the turbulence intensity in connection with magnetized plasmas is given. In contrast to previous definitions the new definition satisfies a Fisher–Kolmogorov–Petrovskii–Piskunov type equation. Furthermore, explicit expressions for the turbulence intensity and the turbulence intensity
