Energy transport characteristics of converging Richtmyer–Meshkov instability

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2020
In this paper, the Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM) instability in spherical and cylindrical converging geometries with a Mach number of about 1.5 is investigated by using the direct numerical simulation method.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The balances of mixing ratios and segregation intensity: a case study from the field (ECHO 2003) [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2014
An inhomogeneous mixing of reactants causes a reduction of their chemical removal compared to the homogeneously mixed case in turbulent atmospheric flows. This can be described by the intensity of segregation IS being the covariance of the mixing

Implementation of the Scalar Dissipation Rate in the REDIM Concept and its Validation for the Piloted Non-Premixed Turbulent Jet Flames

open access: yesEurasian Chemico-Technological Journal, 2021
In order to address the impact of the concentration gradients on the chemistry – turbulence interaction in turbulent flames, the REDIM reduced chemistry is constructed incorporating the scalar dissipation rate, which is a key quantity describing the ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Jet in Accelerating Turbulent Crossflow with Passive Scalar Transport

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
The interaction of a turbulent, spatially developing crossflow with a transverse jet possesses several engineering and technological applications such as film cooling of turbine blades, exhaust plumes, thrust vector control, fuel injection, etc.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Self-sharpening induces jet-like structure in seafloor gravity currents

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
The current paradigm of material transport across the ocean-floor by gravity currents, is of turbulent flows with mixing processes analogous to rivers. However, uniquely high-resolution field data demonstrate that this paradigm is flawed and that gravity

Physics of Stratocumulus Top (POST): turbulent mixing across capping inversion [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2013
High spatial resolution measurements of temperature and liquid water content, accompanied by moderate-resolution measurements of humidity and turbulence, collected during the Physics of Stratocumulus Top experiment are analyzed.
