Save our turtle robots?

Proceedings of the 7th Workshop in Primary and Secondary Computing Education, 2012
This study examines the potential for rethinking dated educational technologies. The mechanised Turtle Robot is taken as a test case to examine whether dated educational technologies can be renewed as a means of maximizing the tools and research of the past towards the new wave of interest in computing education. This paper will present research in ...

Flipper-driven terrestrial locomotion of a sea turtle-inspired robot

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2013
To discover principles of flipper-based terrestrial locomotion we study the mechanics of a hatchling sea turtle-inspired robot, FlipperBot (FBot), during quasi-static movement on granular media. FBot implements a symmetric gait using two servo-motor-driven front limbs with flat-plate flippers and either freely rotating or fixed wrist joints.

A Novel Small-scale Turtle-inspired Amphibious Spherical Robot

2019 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), 2019
This paper describes a novel small-scale turtle-inspired Amphibious Spherical Robot (ASRobot) to accomplish exploration tasks in the restricted environment, such as amphibious areas and narrow underwater cave. A Legged, Multi-Vectored Water-Jet Composite Propulsion Mechanism (LMVWCPM) is designed with four legs, one of which contains three connecting ...

Development of an Amphibious Turtle-Inspired Spherical Mother Robot

Journal of Bionic Engineering, 2013
Abstract Robots play an important role in underwater monitoring and recovery operations, such as pollution detection, submarine sampling and data collection, video mapping, and object recovery in dangerous places. However, regular-sized robots may not be suitable for applications in some restricted underwater environments.

Design of Robot Plotter Software for Making Pattern with Turtle Graphics Algorithm

Journal of Wireless Mobile Networks, Ubiquitous Computing, and Dependable Applications, 2022
Robot plotter can be more practical with a turtle graphics algorithm-designed interface application. Here is a literature review to develop a plotter robot control model. An experiment constructed software to transmit interface and robot plotter commands. Robot plotter uses selective compliance articulated arm (SCARA) on two x and y joints.

Mechanism Design and Gait Experiment of an Amphibian Robotic Turtle

Advanced Robotics, 2011
In this paper we describe the design of a new bio-inspired amphibian robot with high environmental adaptability. The robot, called MiniTurtle-I, can transform terrestrial and aquatic locomotion configurations through a new variable topology mechanism (Leg-Flipper).

Using the Turtle Tot Robot To Enhance Logo for the Hearing Impaired

American Annals of the Deaf, 1985
This paper describes the Turtle Tot, a Logo powered robot that assists hearing-impaired students in making the transition from the concrete geometric movement of their bodies to the directed geometry of computer Logo. Also described is the process for leading students from describing the elements of their body movements to directing the Turtle Tot ...

Robot riders hitch lifts on hungry turtles

New Scientist, 2017
"Parasitic" robots are now riding turtles to get where they need to go. Dae-Gun Kim at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Daejeon and his colleagues glued small box-like robots to the backs of five red-eared slider turtles. The robots included a frame that stuck out in front of the turtle's head holding five red LEDs spaced 30 ...

Modular design and initial gait study of an amphibian robotic turtle

2007 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics (ROBIO), 2007
As another kind of the biomimetic underwater vehicles, a biologically inspired robotic turtle is studied and modeled. The modular design philosophy and construction of the prototype after a family of sea turtle - Cheloniidae is discussed. The dual-purpose robotic turtle is designed to imitate locomotion behaviors of Cheloniidae, both in water and on ...

Revisiting Turtles and Termites

Proceedings of the 2017 Conference on Interaction Design and Children, 2017
We present a first prototype of an open-ended interactive physical game aiming at developing children's understanding of dynamic systems in a playful and embodied way. We use a swarm user interface, Zooids, developed by Le Goc et al., made of independent self-propelled elements that move collectively and react to user input.
