Production of type 1 fimbriae by Escherichia coli HB101

Microbial Pathogenesis, 1991
Escherichia coli HB101 is frequently used as a host in the cloning of bacterial virulence genes because of its reported lack of virulence determinants such as fimbriae, adhesins and haemagglutinins. However, passage of HB101 in standing broth culture rapidly induced the production of fimbriae which mediated adhesion to HEp-2 cells and mannose-sensitive

Functional Variability of Type 1 Fimbriae of Escherichia coli

2005
Type 1 fimbriae and the FimH-adhesins of E. coli differ in adhesive functions: those of a meningitis isolate IHE3034 mediate adhesion to collagens whereas those of an avirulent K-12 strain PC31 do not. Amino acid residue Alanine-62 in the FimH is critical for the collagen binding ability: substitution of Ala62 of IHE3034 FimH into serine abolishes ...

Type 1 fimbriae of Escherichia coli as carriers of heterologous antigenic sequences

Gene, 1989
A strategy has been designed for the construction of recombinant bacterial strains which eventually may become useful as live vaccines and which may also be relevant for the preparation of conventional vaccines. The approach used is the fusion of small antigenic peptide sequences into specific segments of a protein whose location on the bacterial ...

FimK regulation on the expression of type 1 fimbriae in Klebsiella pneumoniae CG43S3

Microbiology, 2013
Klebsiella pneumoniae CG43, a heavy encapsulated liver abscess isolate, mainly expresses type 3 fimbriae. Type 1 fimbriae expression was only apparent in CG43S3ΔmrkA (the type 3 fimbriae-deficient strain). The expression of type 1 fimbriae in CG43S3ΔmrkA was reduced by deleting the fimK gene, but was unaffected by removing the 3' end of fimK encoding ...

Characterisation of epitopes of type 1 fimbriae of Salmonella using monoclonal antibodies specific for SEF21 fimbriae of Salmonella enteritidis

Veterinary Microbiology, 1998
Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were used to identify and characterise epitopes of type 1 (SEF21) fimbriae of Salmonella enteritidis. The distribution of the epitopes among salmonellas and other enterobacteria was investigated, as well as the influence of growth media and temperatures on their expression.

Molecular Biology of Escherichia coli Type 1 Fimbriae

1991
Most strains of Escherichia coli are able to express type 1 fimbriae. These are thread-like surface organelles consisting of around 1000 subunits of a major structural component, the FimA protein, as well as a few percent minor components. Type 1 fimbriae mediate binding to D-mannose containing structures and thereby enable the bacteria to colonize ...

[Type 1 fimbriae and P fimbriae in E. coli producing chronic prostatitis].

Enfermedades infecciosas y microbiologia clinica, 1991
The fimbriated adhesines constitute a factor of virulence of E. coli in the urinary tract infections. The presence of type 1 fimbriae and fimbriae P was evaluated in 23 E. coli strains isolated with patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis. For the diagnosis of prostatitis the Stamey test was used.

Prevalence and Occurrence of Type 1 Fimbriae in Klebsiella pneumoniae

International Journal of Science and Healthcare Research
Background: Klebsiella pneumoniae causes both community acquired and nosocomial infections. The various virulence factors have been well characterised in K. pneumoniae includes: capsule, lipopolysaccharides, siderophores and fimbriae. FimH 1, encoding for fimbriae and mediate adhesion.

Serological conservation and location of the adhesin of avian Escherichia coli type 1 fimbriae

Microbial Pathogenesis, 1991
By inoculation of mice with purified type 1-like fimbriae isolated from an avian Escherichia coli strain, a monoclonal antibody (mAb G5) was obtained. mAb G5 reacted in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with type 1-like and type 1A fimbriae differing in the molecular masses of their major fimbrial subunit and isolated from several avian E ...

Protection of laying hens against Salmonella Enteritidis by immunization with type 1 fimbriae

Veterinary Microbiology, 2005
Eighteen chickens were immunized subcutaneously with purified type 1 fimbriae from Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis at 18 and 21 weeks of age. Evidence of IgG and IgA responses was found in the eggs and in the sera of the immunized hens. Three weeks later, immunized and non-immunized chickens (n=18) were challenged intravenously with 2x10(7 ...
