Silk Fibroin for Cardiovascular Medical Devices: Review of Material Properties, Applications, and Clinical Potential

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
Silk fibroin is an attractive natural biomaterial that can be engineered into diverse cardiovascular constructs, including vascular grafts, cardiac patches, heart valves, and stent coatings. Its tunable biological and mechanical properties have driven substantial preclinical progress; however, widespread clinical translation in cardiovascular ...

Morphological and morphometric aspects of the equine aortic valve: New insights for comparative studies in mammals

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract New data on the equine aortic valve obtained using advanced techniques is especially important given the greater availability of animal models for translational research. Here we characterized the morphological and morphometric aspects of the equine aortic valve from 60 healthy hearts collected at equine abattoirs.

Role of Echocardiography as Supporting Diagnostic Modality in Localized Stanford Type A Aortic Dissection

open access: yesMajalah Kardiologi Indonesia, 2016
Ascending Stanford type A aortic dissection carries a high morbidity and mortality. Proper identification of the proximal origin of the dissection and determination of concomitant aortic valve involvement significantly facilitate surgical repair which ...

A critical reappraisal of the carotid sinus and carotid bulb: Distinguishing neurohistological function from vascular geometry

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
This review redefines the carotid bulb (CB) as a variable geometric dilation shaped by hemodynamics and the carotid sinus (CS) as a conserved neurohistological baroreceptor field. Distinguishing these entities clarifies a century of anatomical confusion and links geometry, neurohistology, and clinical interpretation within a unified framework ...

Age-related presentation of acute type A aortic dissection

open access: yes, 2018
Background: We evaluated the clinical and anatomic presentations of acute type A aortic dissection according to patient age. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 235 consecutive patients who underwent acute type A dissection repair between January 2000 ...

SOX6 is expressed in various cell lineages in the developing mouse heart and contributes to proper valvuloseptal development

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Cells derived from the endocardium, epicardium, cardiac neural crest, and second heart field play a critical role in the formation of the valvuloseptal structures of the heart. Previous studies have shown that the expression of the transcription factor SOX9 in these cell populations is essential in the regulation of this process.

Acute type A aortic dissection involving the iliac and left renal arteries, misdiagnosed as myocardial infarction

open access: yes, 2018
Acute aortic dissection is the most frequent and deadly presentation of acute aortic syndromes. Its incidence is estimated at three to four cases per 100 000 persons per year. Its clinical presentation may be misleading, with misdiagnosis ranging between

Morphological description of the oropharyngeal cavity of Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1766), (Testudines: Kinosternidae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Gross morphology, Light Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed the structural organization of the oropharyngeal cavity of Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides, characterized by mucous epithelium, epithelial pores, and developed lingual papillae.

Possible therapeutic repositioning of valproic acid: From epileptic seizures to acute kidney injury

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Valproic acid, an anticonvulsant, may be repositioned to prevent acute kidney injury due to ischemia followed by reperfusion. It preserves renal functions, electrolyte homeostasis and active sodium transport in kidney tubules, and blocks the onset of hypertension.
