U-value meters in theory and practice
Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, 1982U-value meters estimate the conductance of a wall in situ from simultaneous measurements of heat flux and temperature difference. The difficulty in achieving steady state conditions can give rise to considerable errors; the effects of inside and outside temperature variations, and of sunshine on the outer surface are analysed mathematically.

Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, 1982
The paper explains the philosophy of combining losses with solar gains through the modification of the conventional ‘U’ value used for windows. The definition of the modified value, called the “Effective ‘U’ value” is given in the form of an equation and a simple proof is given.

In situ measurement of U-values
Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, 1985The measurement of the U-value of a built structure presents great difficulties, since the thermal mass of most structures and the inevitable diurnal temperature variations prevent steady state conditions ever being realised. A conventional U-value meter takes a simultaneous measure of heat flow and temperature difference across the wall, and computes ...

Thermal bridging: Significance in U-value calculation
Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, 1988Thermal bridging by, for example, structural timber and mortar joints, is far too often neglected in U-value calculation. This is the case even with Building Regulations 'deemed to satisfy' constructions. Such bad practice is unnecessary because the CIBSE Guide Section A3 provides a method of calculation.

The assessment of U-values for insulated roofs
Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, 1980This paper reports the results of a series of thermal conductivity and thermal transmittance tests which were designed to investigate the discrepancy between U-values calculated i sing CIBS guidelines and some results obtained by the Agrément Board in their “hot box” apparatus.

Dynamic U Value Measurement for Indoor Temperature Prediction with NN
CONECT. International Scientific Conference of Environmental and Climate Technologies, 2023Nowadays, monitoring and automated control are key for the power-efficient and comfortable use of buildings. As the demand for the indoor climate grows, the complexity of building control increases due to the increased number of controlled systems within the building.

U-Value Measurement in Buildings. is It an Accurate Estimate?
2025 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Living Environment (MetroLivEnv)The U-value of thermal transmission of building components expresses the insulation capacity of walls and can be used to define the energy efficiency of buildings. The value is also required by the European directive 2002/91/EC relating to the energy performance of buildings.

Experimental U-values of some house walls
Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, 1994Experimental U-values based on measured heat flows through the walls of some houses have been found to be significantly higher than predicted by conventional calculation procedures. The work was carried out in ordinary occupied houses, and included measurements on party, internal and external walls.
