Contributions to the Knowledge of the Larval Morphology of Synalpheus Spence Bate, 1888 (Caridea: Alpheidae): Description of the First Zoea of S. antillensis Coutière, 1909 and S. cf. townsendi Coutière, 1909 Reared in Laboratory

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The first zoea of two Synalpheus species, namely: S. antillensis and S. cf. townsendi, are herein described. They were also compared with the genus descriptions and with their respective species complexes available in the literature. Morphological information on Synalpheus zoea I exhibits an increase from 19 to 21 species, and it corresponds ...

Genetic, phenotypic, and ecological differentiation indicate a new cryptic and threatened species in the orchid genus Epidendrum from Alcatrazes Island, southeastern Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
Epidendrum insularis occurs on the remote Alcatrazes Island in the southeastern Brazilian coast. The description of this new cryptic species was only possible by the joint use of molecular markers, reproductive experiments, flower morphometry, functional traits, and community analysis.

Dietary Soybean and Kappaphycus sp. Differentially Modulate Gut Microbiota Diversity and Predicted Functional Profile in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2026.
Soybean meal and Kappaphycus sp. diets reshaped gut microbiota diversity, taxonomic composition, and predicted metabolic functions in Nile tilapia while maintaining a stable core microbiota. These findings highlight gut microbial responses as a useful indicator for evaluating sustainable alternative feed ingredients in aquaculture.

Crushing and Cutting: Shape Variation and Morphological Integration Between the Claws of Two Swimming Crab Species (Brachyura: Portunidae)

open access: yesActa Zoologica, Volume 107, Issue 4, Page 450-459, October 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigated shape variations and morphological integration between the components of crusher and cutter claws in two species of swimming crabs, Callinectes danae and Callinectes ornatus. The propodi and dactyli of the claws were analysed in males and females of both species, using geometric morphometric techniques to identify ...
