Temperature‐dependent growth and activity in a globally distributed nitrogen‐fixing haptophyte
Abstract Dinitrogen (N2)‐fixing microorganisms play a crucial role in supplying nitrogen (N) to the oceans by converting atmospheric N2 into bioavailable N. N2 fixation was thought to be limited to warm oligotrophic ocean waters, but the association between the N2‐fixing UCYN‐A cyanobacterium and specific haptophytes, including Braarudosphaera ...

Venn diagram of orthologs for UCYN-A1, A2, and A3.
All UCYN-A1, A2, and A3 genes with gene symbol and/or pathway annotation are represented. Hypothetical proteins are excluded. Orthologs are based on identical gene symbols between sublineages. (TIF)

The availability of fixed nitrogen, which is imperative to the productivity of the ocean, is largely controlled by microbial diazotrophs. These nitrogen-fixing organisms are diverse and widespread, and studying their ecology and genomics gives us ...

Mesozooplankton Graze on Cyanobacteria in the Amazon River Plume and Western Tropical North Atlantic
Diazotrophic cyanobacteria, those capable of fixing di-nitrogen (N2), are considered one of the major sources of new nitrogen (N) in the oligotrophic tropical ocean, but direct incorporation of diazotrophic N into food webs has not been fully examined ...

Water Column Structure and Nutrient Supply on the Northwest Atlantic Shelf: A Nitrate Isotope Study
Abstract The Northwest Atlantic continental shelf is a highly productive marine region with major uncertainties regarding the supply mechanisms of nutrients fueling productivity. This study uses nitrate isotopes (δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3) from the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program 2020 fall mission and an Optimum Multiparameter Analysis to evaluate on‐shelf ...

Specific cyanobacteria, primarily Synechococcus, and other microbes show strong seasonal enrichment in San Diego Bay. Circulation, higher temperatures, light and other altered environmental conditions create a unique zone for microbial evolution and diversification. Amplicon sequence data and isolates provide evidence of these processes.

Distributions and Abundances of Sublineages of the Nitrogen-Fixing Cyanobacterium Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium Thalassa (UCYN-A) in South Pacific Waters [PDF]
Nitrogen (N2) fixation is a major source of nitrogen that supports primary production in the vast oligotrophic areas of the world’s oceans. The Southwestern Pacific Ocean has been identified as a potential hotspot for N2 fixation based on empirical and ...

N2-fixation rates and UCYN abundance in <3 μm and >3 μm particles.
Top panels: 3μm particles. For each station and depth, N2-fixation rates (μmol m-3 d-1) measured in each size fraction are indicated in blue (d.l. indicate measurements below the detection limit).
