Fossilization in Second Language Performance: The Concern of Ultimate Attainment

International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science, 2023
The issue of fossilization has been a concern for researchers, in the area of second language acquisition, many of whom have investigated its possible causes, in what form they appear, and at what age. However, it is evident that second language learners fail to reach native-like competence in the target language.

Ultimate attainment in late second language acquisition: Phonetic and grammatical challenges in advanced Dutch–English bilingualism

Second Language Research, 2014
The present article provides an exploration of ultimate attainment in second language (L2) and its limitations. It is argued that the question of maturational constraints can best be investigated when the reference population is bilingual and exposed on a regular basis to varieties of their first language (L1) that show cross-linguistic influence.

Identity, agency and intercultural dialogic competencies in L2 ultimate attainment

Language and Dialogue, 2021
AbstractThis preliminary study seeks to examine the role of agency and bilinguals’ identity negotiated in the processes of acculturation as key factors in attaining a very high or near-native L2 proficiency. Sensitive periods, language aptitude, and ultimate L2 attainment

2013
Research on second language acquisition (SLA) has identified language aptitude and age of onset (AO), i.e., the age at which learners are first meaningfully exposed to the L2, as robust predictors of rate of classroom language learning and level of ultimate L2 attainment in naturalistic settings, respectively.

Ultimate attainment of tense/aspectual contrasts in L2 Spanish
