Observation of Relativistic Domain Wall Motion in Amorphous Ferrimagnets

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Domain walls in ferrimagnets and antiferromagnets move as relativistic sine‐Gordon solitons, with the spin‐wave velocity setting their speed limit. Such relativistic domain‐wall motion is demonstrated in amorphous GdFeCo near angular momentum compensation, where current‐driven walls reach 90% of the 2 kms−1 spin‐wave speed, enabling ultrafast, device ...

Prediction of Ultimate Torque of Reinforced Concrete Box Beam Bonded with CFRP Strips

open access: yesKSCE Journal of Civil Engineering, 2018
One control and three strengthened Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams with box-section were subjected to pure torsion. The proposed strengthening schemes were U-jacketing or U-jacketing with longitudinal strips of fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The U-jacketing strips exhibited a reasonable improvement to the ultimate torque from the experimental ...

Exploring the phase diagram of fully turbulent Taylor-Couette flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Direct numerical simulations of Taylor–Couette flow, i.e. the flow between two coaxial and independently rotating cylinders, were performed. Shear Reynolds numbers of up to 3×105, corresponding to Taylor numbers of Ta=4.6×1010, were reached.

Bone Healing Around Implants in Normal and Medically Compromised Conditions: Osteoporosis and Diabetes

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
xx xx. ABSTRACT Osseointegration of orthopedic and dental implants is influenced by local and systemic factors, including their physicochemical surface properties and the patient's overall health status. Titanium and its alloys have been a longstanding standard for bone implants due to their innate biocompatibility and mechanical properties.

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.

Analysis of API 5C3 failure prediction formulae for casing and tubing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Due to the increasing demand for oil and gas, coupled with the fact that oil reserves are becoming rather scarce, the petroleum industry is pushed to drill and complete deeper wells. Threaded connections are often the weakest link in this process and are
