Mode repulsion of ultrasonic guided waves in rails
Ultrasonics, 2018Accurate computation of dispersion characteristics of guided waves in rails is important during the development of inspection and monitoring systems. Wavenumber versus frequency curves computed by the semi-analytical finite element method exhibit mode repulsion and mode crossing which can be difficult to distinguish.

Ultrasonic guided wave scattering in a plate overlap
IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 2005Guided wave scattering in a plate overlap is investigated by numerical calculations and experimental measurements of transmission and reflection factors from the overlap region. In the numerical study, a hybrid boundary element-finite element method is used to calculate the guided wave scattered field from the overlap region.

Guided wave helical ultrasonic tomography of pipes
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2003Ultrasonic guided waves have been used for a wide variety of ultrasonic inspection techniques. We describe here a new variation called helical ultrasound tomography (HUT) that uses guided ultrasonic waves along with tomographic reconstruction algorithms that have been developed by seismologists for what they call “cross borehole” tomography.

COMPUTATIONAL METHODS FOR GUIDED ULTRASONIC WAVES IN PLATES
International Journal of Computational Methods, 2006Reducing the general problem of computing three-dimensional Green's function in a transversely isotropic plate to a finite summation of contributions from a series of planar problems can efficiently yield an accurate solution. Hence, solving the planar scattering problem, of the Pressure-Shear-Vertical (PSV) type or the Shear-Horizontal (SH) type, was

Ultrasonic guided waves in bone
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2008Recent progress in quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has shown increasing interest towards measuring long bones by ultrasonic guided waves. This technology is widely used in the field of non-destructive testing and evaluation of different waveguide structures.

Ultrasonic guided wave tomography for ice detection
Ultrasonics, 2016Of great concern for many structures, particularly critical sections of rotary and fixed wing aircrafts, is the ability to detect ice either on grounded or in-flight vehicles. As a consequence, some work is reported here that could be useful for a variety of different industries where ice formation is an important problem.

Ultrasonic guided-waves characterization with warped frequency transforms
IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 2008Guided wave (GW) dispersion curves can be extracted from a time-transient measurement by means of timefrequency representations (TFRs). Unfortunately, any TFR is subject to the time-frequency uncertainty principle. This, in general, limits the capability of TFRs to characterize closely spaced guided modes over a wide frequency range.

Non-contact ultrasonic guided wave inspection of rails
SPIE Proceedings, 2013The University of California at San Diego (UCSD), under a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Office of Research and Development (R&D) grant, is developing a system for high-speed and non-contact rail integrity evaluation. A prototype using an ultrasonic air-coupled guided wave signal generation and air-coupled signal detection, in pair with a ...

Ultrasonic Guided Waves in Bone: A Decade of Advancement in Review
IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control, 2022The use of guided wave ultrasonography as a means to assess cortical bone quality has been a significant practice in bone quantitative ultrasound for more than 20 years. In this article, the key developments within the technology of ultrasonic guided waves (UGW) in long bones during the past decade are documented.

On the interpolation of ultrasonic guided wave signals
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2012The application of ultrasonic guided wave methods to both nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) is becoming more prevalent as techniques to handle their multi-modal and dispersive nature are developed. There are several applications where it would be not only convenient but perhaps essential to interpolate arrays of ...
