Residual Stress Measurement in an Ultrasonic Peened Specimen

Volume 5: Materials Technology; Petroleum Technology, 2014
Plastic deformation from peening induces a compressive residual stress on the treated surface which provides resistance to metal fatigue. Hence, peening is often used to extend the fatigue lives of welded components by reducing the effective tensile residual stress. This paper describes the influence of ultrasonic peening on the residual stress.

Strength enhancement of the welded structures by ultrasonic peening

Materials & Design, 2012
Abstract Residual stresses exist in all manufacturing processes which use heat and/or force such as casting, forming, machining and welding. Sometimes they cause decrease in strength and life of components especially under dynamic loads and vibration conditions. To improve fatigue strength, a number of post treatment operations are being used such as

Ultrasonic characterization of shot-peened metal surfaces

SPIE Proceedings, 2001
Shot peening is a well-known method for extending the fatigue life of metal components by introducing near-surface compressive residual stresses. The capability to nondestructively evaluate near-surface residual stress would greatly aid the assurance of proper fatigue life in shot-peened components.

Comparison Research on Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel after Laser Peened and Ultrasonically Peened

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
The mechanical properties of 1Cr11Ni2W2MoV stainless steel after laser peening (LP) and ultrasonic shot peening (USP) were examined and compared. The stainless steel specimens were treated with the two different surface processing techniques. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), microhardness tester were used to investigate ...

Deburring and surface conditioning of micro milled structures by micro peening and ultrasonic wet peening

Microsystem Technologies, 2006
Deburring and smooth finishing processes for milled workpieces are well known in macro mould and die manufacturing. These processes are not directly transferable to micro parts and must be modified for this purpose. Therefore, deburring and surface conditioning by micro peening and ultrasonic wet peening of structures made by micro milling of quenched ...

Influence of Ultrasonic Peening on Wear Resistance of U70 Rails

Advanced Materials Research, 2010
The surface of U70 rails was treated by ultrasonic peening method. Keeping the electric current 1.5 A, the amplitude 24 µm and the frequency 10000 HZ during the treatment, the peening duration was 10 min, 20 min, 40 min and 60 min respectively. The wear property, wear appearance, and structural appearance of specimens have been studied by M-2000 wear ...
