Residual Stress Measurement in an Ultrasonic Peened Specimen

Volume 5: Materials Technology; Petroleum Technology, 2014
Plastic deformation from peening induces a compressive residual stress on the treated surface which provides resistance to metal fatigue. Hence, peening is often used to extend the fatigue lives of welded components by reducing the effective tensile residual stress. This paper describes the influence of ultrasonic peening on the residual stress.

Ultrasonic impact peening for the surface properties’ management

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2007
Abstract It is demonstrated that the ultrasonic impact peening (UIP) technique is a beneficial method for essential increase in the fatigue durability of metallic materials due to the surface nanocrystallization and hardening process provided for severe plastic deformation of surface via multiple impacts of high velocity impact pins. Nano-scale grain

Capability evaluation of ultrasonic cavitation peening at different standoff distances

Ultrasonics, 2018
Ultrasonic cavitation peening is a novel surface treatment technology which utilizes the effect of cavitation bubble collapses to improve the properties of metal surfaces. In order to obtain high impact during ultrasonic cavitation peening, a small standoff distance between a sound radiator and a rigid reflector (the surface of treated specimen) is ...
