Ultrastructure of Xanthelasma

Xanthelasma from both upper eyelids of a patient were examined by electron microscopy. The cytoplasm of the foam cells was filled with lipid droplets that were not bounded by a membrane. The lipid itself dissolved out during tissue preparation despite osmium or glutaraldehyde-osmium fixation, indicating that the lipid is highly unsaturated.

The ultrastructure of pinealomas

Four pinealomas of the two-cell type (atypical teratomas) were investigated by electron microscopy. They all showed the same unique histological ultrastructure. The lymphocyte-like cells did not differ ultrastructurally from lymphocytes. Many plasma cells with well-developed rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum were also seen.

Ultrastructure of dermatofibroma

Eight dermatofibromas were studied by electron microscopy. The essential cell was the fibroblast, characterized by a well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), a distinct Golgi zone and large numbers of cytofilaments. The fibroblast of the dermatofibroma was engaged in collagen production and fat storage.

Ultrastructure of a “Pineocytoma”

The commonest pineal gland tumor, the germinoma, is more apparently related to germ cells than to pineal cells. Although ultrastructural studies of this tumor have confirmed this similarity, comparable characterization of a pineocytoma has not been reported, due to its rarity.

The ultrastructure of gonadoblastoma and dysgerminoma

Abstract A gonadoblastoma associated with dysgerminoma that occurred in the gonad of a 17 year old phenotypic female has been studied with the electron microscope. Ultrastructurally the nests of gonadoblastoma contain two cell types, namely, large vesicular cells and small epithelium-like cells.
