It is diagnosed by a palpable or visible cord and is often accompanied by severe, rapid fetal heart rate decelerations. Cases of cord prolapse should be delivered as soon as possible, usually by cesarean section.

Stricture of the umbilical cord
The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 1973A case of stricture of the umbilical cord of a foetus about 33 weeks old has been reported. It was located 1.5 cm away from the umbilical attachment. There was no evidence of haemorrhage, inflammation or degeneration. The stricture was due to an abundant growth of fibrous tissue which is probably a dysplastic lesion.

Teratoma of the umbilical cord
Human Pathology, 1985A case of teratoma of the umbilical cord is described. Four previous reports of this entity are briefly reviewed, and a detailed description of the current case is presented. The histogenesis of teratomas at this unusual site is discussed. The features that distinguish teratomas of the umbilical cord and placenta from acardius fetus are enumerated.
