AbstractThe application of a bench scale and an industrial scale pressure screen to separate cellulosic fines from an unbleached softwood kraft pulp containing 5 % (w/w) primary fines was investigated and the results were compared. In the bench scale trials different microperforated screens with hole diameters of 150 µm, 250 µm, 400 µm and 600 µm were ...

The surface properties of unbleached softwood (Pinus sylvestris) and hardwood (Betula verrucosa) kraft pulps were modified by treating the fibre surfaces with specific xylanase and mannanase (Trichoderma reesei). The amounts and accessibilities of surface carboxyl groups in untreated and enzyme-treated fibres were analyzed using adsorption of cationic ...

Characterization of Residual Lignins Isolated from Unbleached and Semibleached Softwood Kraft Pulps
Journal of Wood Chemistry and Technology, 1987Abstract Residual lignins in an unbleached and a semibleached softwood (Pinus taeda L.) kraft pulp were isolated by enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides in the pulps. After purification, the residual lignins were characterized. A dissolved lignin was also isolated from the alkaline extraction spent liquor by acidification and characterized.

Characterisation of fines from unbleached kraft pulps and their impact on sheet properties
hfsg, 2008Abstract Fines are an essential component in the papermaking process because they have a profound influence on the behaviour of the wet web and on the mechanical properties of the final sheet. Primary fines are present in the pulp prior to refining, and secondary fines are produced during refining.
