Human-likeness assessment for the Uncanny Valley Hypothesis
Bio-Algorithms and Med-Systems, 2017Abstract The Uncanny Valley Hypothesis (UVH, proposed in the 1970s) suggests that looking at or interacting with almost human-like artificial characters would trigger eeriness or discomfort. We studied how well subjects can assess degrees of human likeness for computer-generated characters.

Uncanny Valley of Androids and Its Lateral Inhibition Hypothesis
RO-MAN 2007 - The 16th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication, 2007The "uncanny valley" must be avoided from the viewpoint of communication robot design, while this is an essential phenomenon for discovering the principles relevant to establishing social interaction between human and robot. Studying the uncanny valley allows us to explore the boundary of human-likeness.

An Experimental Approach to Uncanny Valley Hypothesis
Journal of the Ergonomics Society of Korea, 2007ABSTRACT The uncanny valley is a hypothesis about robotics concerning the emotional response of humans to robots and other non-human entities. Although it stands today as one of the most commonly known design considerations of humanoid robots and synthetic characters, the uncanny valley was speculative and few studies have been performed to test the ...

The uncanny valley hypothesis refers to a subjective experience of eeriness to highly human-like objects (e.g., realistic avatars). There is evidence that objects at the human-avatar category boundary along the dimension of human likeness (DHL) are more likely to evoke the uncanny valley effect.
