Underground economy modelling: simple models with complicated dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes
The paper aims to model the underground economy using two different models: one based on the labor supply method and a generalized model for the allocation of time.

Performance assessment of a potential underground thermal storage facility: Case study of the closed mine Prosper‐Haniel in the Ruhr coal mining area in Germany

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of an underground closed‐loop thermal storage facility at a post‐mining site, intended for seasonal heat energy storage. Its principal design shows water flow directions in winter and summer (1, 2), heat pumps (3), an upper water reservoir (4), and connecting pipes (5).

Seismic analysis and design of tunnels within fault ground: A review

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The research methods of seismic response of tunnels within fault ground, including field investigations, analytical solutions, physical experiments, and numerical simulations, and seismic countermeasures are discussed. The present study examines the shortcomings and limitations of the current research and design, and puts forward proposals for future ...

AN IMPROVEMENT OF THE TANZI METHOD FOR THE ESTIMATION OF ITALIAN UNGERGROUND ECONOMY [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper deals with the Tanzi method for the estimation of underground economy. The approach is discussed and modified. Refinements on the variables and on the econometric technique are proposed. The “adjusted” Tanzi method is then used to estimate the

Unveiling spatial heterogeneity in urban underground space development patterns and mechanisms for differentiated planning: A points of interest‐based study of Shanghai

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study investigated the spatial patterns and development mechanisms of urban underground space (UUS) in Shanghai using underground points of interest data. It revealed distinct development mechanisms between the main city and suburbs, highlighting the need for differentiated UUS planning and policies to optimize underground space resources ...

Dynamic cracking properties and generating conditions of coal under rapid gas release

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Gas release tests revealed that crack initiation and propagation are jointly controlled by initial crack length, residual strength, and gas release velocity. A new outburst risk coefficient was thus developed from a fracture mechanics perspective, offering a novel predictive approach.

Advances in vital‐sign prediction and early‐warning models for underground coal mine workers integrating environmental factors

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This review synthesizes advances in predicting miners' vital signs by integrating environmental monitoring (dust, temperature, and gas) with physiological data. It highlights multi‐source data fusion techniques and early‐warning models for enhanced occupational safety in underground coal mines.

The effects of the underground economy on economic competitiviness [PDF]

open access: yes
A real, almost palpable, connection exists between the official and the underground economy. More than that, both sides of the economy (official and underground) are connected with the competitiveness of a country.
