Software-defined underwater acoustic networking platform

Proceedings of the Fourth ACM International Workshop on UnderWater Networks - WUWNet '09, 2009
Currently acoustics is the primary modality for underwater communication even though it presents a difficult channel. To try and cope with the challenges of the channel many MAC protocols and PHY layer techniques have been proposed. In this paper we present a research platform that allows developers to easily implement and compare their protocols in an

Underwater Drones for Acoustic Sensor Network

2021
Apparently, two-thirds of our planet is covered by water bodies, of which oceanic coverage deeply impacts terrestrial life. Oceans form a majestic resource of most of the amazing marine creatures and natural resources, especially mineral oil. This makes underwater monitoring one of the most demanding areas to explore.

Swimmer tracking with underwater acoustic networks

2010 10th International Symposium on Communications and Information Technologies, 2010
A scheme for positioning swimmers using underwater acoustic networks is proposed. The design and the performance of such a network are presented. Owing to its high accuracy, the spherical interpolation approach is employed as the positioning algorithm.

Eavesdropping attacks in underwater acoustic networks

2015 10th International Conference on Information, Communications and Signal Processing (ICICS), 2015
This paper investigates the eavesdropping attacks in underwater acoustic networks (UANets). In particular, we propose an analytical framework to model the eavesdropping attacks in UANets in terms of the eavesdropping probability. Results of extensive simulations match the analytical results, indicating the effectiveness and accuracy of our model ...

Scheduling granularity in underwater acoustic networks

Proceedings of the Sixth ACM International Workshop on Underwater Networks - WUWNet '11, 2011
Underwater acoustic networks have many distinct channel characteristics when compared to terrestrial networks. Long propagation delay, one such characteristic, allows scheduling methods with varying granularity that tradeoff schedule quality with protocol overhead.

A Networking Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Networks

2000
Abstract : There exists an increasing demand for reliable, high capacity Underwater Acoustic Networks (UANs), as evidenced by the large volume of research invested over the last decade in overcoming the difficulties inherent with propagation of information bearing signals through shallow water regions.

On Multicasting in Underwater Acoustic Networks

2015 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM), 2014
Even though underwater acoustic communication suffers from long propagation delays and has very limited bandwidth, it still plays a key role in supporting long-distance, low-power communication in underwater sensor networks. Many previous studies have tried to mitigate the impact of long propagation delays, but recently, the focus has shifted from ...

Underwater acoustic sensor networks: research challenges

Ad Hoc Networks, 2005
Underwater sensor nodes will find applications in oceanographic data collection, pollution monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, assisted navigation and tactical surveillance applications. Moreover, unmanned or autonomous underwater vehicles (UUVs, AUVs), equipped with sensors, will enable the exploration of natural undersea resources ...

Software-Driven Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

2010
Deployment efforts of underwater acoustic sensor networks have been impeded by the prohibitive monetary cost and high power consumption of existing acoustic hardware, which typically targets deep-water long-range communication. To address this issue, we propose software-driven underwater networks that rely on widely available speakers and microphones ...
