A Hybrid Propulsion Method for Underwater Vehicle

2010 International Conference on System Science, Engineering Design and Manufacturing Informatization, 2010
Nowadays, Underwater Vehicles are widely used in ocean environment monitoring, ocean resources exploration and military areas. Therefore, it is required for Underwater Vehicles to have longer work time, wider work space, and what’s more, it is also required for Underwater Vehicles to have the ability to move agilely and locate ccurately.

THE HYDRODYNAMICS OF UNDERWATER JET PROPULSION

1953
Abstract : Force measurements were obtained with a new sensitive balance for a range of nose shapes and cavitation parameters (K) under conditions of open- cavity flow. Drag-coefficient (CD) data were obtained for a 12- to 25-ft/sec range on model sizes ranging from 0.500 to 1.414 in. in diameter for the sharper cone.

Ducted Propellers for High-Speed Underwater Propulsion

Journal of Hydronautics, 1968
Cavitation limits subcavitating marine propellers to modest forward speeds. At higher speeds the propeller can be designed to operate under cavitating conditions; however, for efficient operation a supercavitating propeller requires a fully developed cavity.

Propulsion Measurement of High Frequency Underwater SAW Actuators

2020 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS), 2020
Underwater self-propelled robots have been studied in various fields such as life sciences, microbiology and medical. Among them, self-propelled robot with SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) has attracted much attention, because of the simple surface electrode structure. SAW transducer can be miniaturized with the higher resonance frequency.

Optimization of man's energy during underwater paddle propulsion

Ergonomics, 1979
Abstract This study is an attempt to analyse man as a self-propelled underwater vehicle in order to define the optimum levels of his muscular work that would minimize the oxygen consumption needed for underwater paddle propulsion. Such an attempt is essential to the efficient operation of man in the sea. The optimum parameters namely: the travel speed,

Liquid resistance in underwater laser propulsion

Applied Optics
To investigate liquid resistance in underwater laser propulsion, we conducted underwater propulsion experiments with cylindrical titanium targets of identical mass but varying propulsion areas through high-speed photography. An analytical formula was derived to elucidate the relationship among the kinetic energy of the target, the energy of the bubble ...

Propulsive efficiency of a biomorphic pulsed-jet underwater vehicle

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2010
The effect of the velocity program and duty cycle (St(L)) on the propulsive efficiency of pulsed-jet propulsion was studied experimentally on a self-propelled, pulsed-jet underwater vehicle, dubbed Robosquid due to the similarity of essential elements of its propulsion system with squid jet propulsion.

Propulsive Efficiency of the Underwater Dolphin Kick in Humans

Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, 2009
Three-dimensional fully unsteady computational fluid dynamic simulations of five Olympic-level swimmers performing the underwater dolphin kick are used to estimate the swimmer’s propulsive efficiencies. These estimates are compared with those of a cetacean performing the dolphin kick.

Propulsive efficiency of underwater vehicles using unsteady propulsors

2013 American Control Conference, 2013
This study examines the propulsive efficiency of underwater vehicles which are driven by unsteady propulsors. The analysis is focused on vehicles utilizing a novel thruster which expels finite propulsive jets periodically. This analysis also applies to swimming squid and jellyfish (from which the thruster was inspired), and can be extended to any ...

Biomimetic Propulsion Systems for Mini-Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

OCEANS 2007, 2007
This paper describes work carried out as part of a PhD research project investigating biomimetic propulsion systems for underwater vehicles at the University of Glasgow. The work focuses on the development of a vehicle called the RoboSalmon, which is a low-cost prototype allowing for different types of fish-like biomimetic propulsion systems to be ...
