Abstract: This essay offers a performance history of The Seeing Eye (1929), which systematized efforts to train guide dogs for the blind in the United States. The Seeing Eye's charge was both rehabilitative and representational, facilitating blind Americans' productive citizenship by countering prevailing presumptions of blind dependence.
