Studies reveal that damping is adversely affected by the incorporation of a DC-voltage regulator. Nonlinear power system damping control strategies for the unified power flow controller (UPFC)
PowerCon 2000. 2000 International Conference on Power System Technology. Proceedings (Cat. No.00EX409), 2002In this paper, a nonlinear UPFC damping control strategy based on a combination of PI and fuzzy controllers is proposed to damp low frequency electromechanical power oscillations. The proposed control scheme coordinates the unique power flow control features in different control modes of a UPFC to allow the best damping effects to be achieved.

Power Processing and Electronic Specialists Conference 1972, 2002A system of class B choppers equalizes the DC voltages of the back-to-back multilevel converters of the UPFC thus removing the constraint that the voltages of the series and the shunt converter must operate at a fixed ratio. This allows the UPFC to operate with independent controls over the real power and the reactive powers on both sides.
