Introduction: Unipolarity, State Behavior, and Systemic Consequences

World Politics, 2009
The United States emerged from the 1990s as an unrivaled global “unipolar” state. This extraordinary imbalance has triggered global debate. Governments and peoples around the world are struggling to understand to how an American-centered unipolar system operates—and to respond to it. What is the character of domination in a unipolar distribution?

Defensive Advantage in a Unipolar System

2007
Most of the previous chapters have discussed unipolar paradigms in which the weaker states have the initiative: they have the choice of balancing or bandwagoning. Those states seek alliances, while the unipolar power avoids commitment. Those states try to bind the unipolar power with international law, and the unipolar power resists. The unipolar power

Unipolar Precoder Designs for Generalized Spatial Modulation MIMO-VLC Systems

Wireless Personal Communications, 2021
In this paper, we propose the three sub-optimal precoded single-mode joint generalized spatial modulation (SM-JGSM) constellation designs for high correlated indoor multi-input multi-output visible light communication (MIMO-VLC) channels. SM-JGSM constellation sets obtained using these computationally efficient iterative design algorithms offer ...

Unipolar subcycle pulse-driven nonresonant excitation of quantum systems

Optics Letters, 2019
The interaction of subcycle pulses with quantum systems is considered when the pulse duration becomes much smaller than the timescales of electron oscillations. We show analytically that the interaction process in this case is governed by the electric pulse area.

Comparison of Unipolar Codes for DS-OCDMA System

2008 2nd ICTON Mediterranean Winter, 2008
In this work, we describe a Direct Sequence Optical Codes Division Multiple Access (DS-OCDMA) system using unipolar codes which are the Prime Sequence (PS), the Quadratic Codes (QC) and the Extended Quadratic Codes (EQC). The performances comparison of the three family codes, for coherent and incoherent source, shows that the EQC codes offer better ...

SECURITY APPROACHES OF REGIONAL POWERS IN A UNIPOLAR SYSTEM

Uluslararası Ekonomi ve Siyaset Bilimleri Akademik Araştırmalar Dergisi, 2023
The power capacities of the states and the distribution of these capacities are important in determining both the polarity of the system and the characteristics of the countries in terms of being a superpower, great power, and regional power within the anarchic structure of the international system.

Alliance Patterns in a Unipolar System

2007
Given the prevalence of bandwagoning rather than balancing, one might think a unipolar system would be one filled with alliances. Deeper reflection, however, reveals that this is not necessarily true Alliances are a tool of balancers, great powers who need to be able to count on one another to block the power of other great powers Alliances are also ...

Unipolar Electrode System for an Implantable Defibrillator: New Experimental Approaches

Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, 1984
Chez le chien normal nous avons étudié le seuil de défibrillation après induction de fibrillation ventriculaire par un courant alternatif. Après une période de fibrillation soutenue de 10 secondes, des chocs d'énérgie progressivement croissante sont delivrés. Le systèeme d'éléctrode endocavitaire est capable d'une configuration unipolaire ou bipolaire;

Proposed Cardiac Pacemaker System Combining Unipolar Stimulation with Bipolar Sensing

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1979
Present cardiac pacemaker designs use either unipolar or bipolar electrode systems. Advantages of unipolar electrodes for stimulation are listed; then arguments in favor of bipolar electrodes for sensing are cited. A proposed system combines unipolar stimulation with bipolar sensing and may be implemented by adding a differential-input stage to the ...

Right Side Implant of the Unipolar Single Lead Defihrillation System

Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, 1997
The active can defibrillator has been designed for implantation in the left prepectoral region. Whether this system can be successfully implanted on the right side is unknown. We describe six cases in which placement of the unipolar single lead defibrillation system was successfully attempted in the right prepectoral region due to impediments on the ...
