The influence of schizotypal traits on attention under high perceptual load

open access: yesSchizophrenia Research: Cognition, 2018
Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD) are known to be characterised by abnormalities in attentional processes, but there are inconsistencies in the literature that remain unresolved.

TRANSLATIVE PACKING TWO SQUARES IN THE UNIT SQUARE

open access: yesDemonstratio Mathematica, 2003
For a given square \(S\) and a sequence \((S_n)\) of squares in the plane, we say that \((S_n)\) can be translatively packed in \(S\) if there exist translations \(\tau_i\) such that the translates \(\tau_i S_i\) \((i= 1,\dots, n)\) have pairwise disjoint interiors and are subsets of \(S\).

Establishing an assay to evaluate d‐amino acid oxidase enzyme kinetics and inhibition using WST‐8 redox dye

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated a novel WST‐8‐based assay for evaluating d‐Amino acid oxidase (DAO) inhibitors. We confirmed its effectiveness using known inhibitors and found that uremic toxins possess relatively weak inhibitory activity compared to existing drugs.

Specialist multidisciplinary input maximises rare disease diagnoses from whole genome sequencing

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Whole genome sequencing is emerging as a first-line test for rare genetic diseases. In this study, authors maximise diagnoses by supplementing existing semiautomated analyses with clinically driven reevaluation of genomic data by a specialist ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Development of an initial training and evaluation programme for manual lower limb muscle MRI segmentation

open access: yesEuropean Radiology Experimental
Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) quantification of intramuscular fat accumulation is a responsive biomarker in neuromuscular diseases. Despite emergence of automated methods, manual muscle segmentation remains an essential foundation. We aimed

Investigating the relationship between BMI across adulthood and late life brain pathologies

open access: yesAlzheimer’s Research & Therapy, 2021
Background In view of reported associations between high adiposity, particularly in midlife and late-life dementia risk, we aimed to determine associations between body mass index (BMI), and BMI changes across adulthood and brain structure and pathology ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Proximal Aorta Flow as a Proxy for Ventricular–Arterial Interaction

open access: yesJournal of Vascular Diseases
Ventricular–arterial coupling (VAC) describes the dynamic interaction between left ventricular (LV) systolic elastance and the time-varying elastance/impedance of the arterial tree, a relationship that governs the instantaneous generation of aortic flow ...
