Maturational Constraints on SLA: Access to Universal Grammar [PDF]
Some scholars have argued that there is a negative correlation between the onset age of L2 acquisition and performance on different measures of L2 knowledge. A kind of biological scheduling is assumed to be responsible for this maturational constraint on

Access to Second Language Acquisition
This paper discusses the different views on the availability of UG principles in language acquisition of adult second language learners, and summarizes some of the evidence for or against each position. One important issue in current language acquisition

Subtle implicit language facts emerge from the functions of constructions
Much has been written about the unlikelihood of innate, syntax-specific, universal knowledge of language (Universal Grammar) on the grounds that it is biologically implausible, unresponsive to cross-linguistic facts, theoretically inelegant, and ...

ABSTRACT Mental well‐being is central to adult learner success, yet many adult education institutions lack capacity to provide timely and accessible support. This article examines how artificial intelligence (AI) can strengthen mental health–adjacent supports in adult and continuing higher education, with attention to professional practice and ...

In this note we present an elementary proof of the following result due to T. Kasai: for each alphabet Σ there exists a context free grammar G such that for each context-free language K over Σ a regular control set C can be found such that G controlled by C and operating in the leftmost fashion generates K.

PlantGFM: A Genomic Foundation Model for Discovery and Creation of Plant Genes
A plant genomic foundation model pre‐trained on 12 species enables both accurate gene prediction and de novo gene design. Through AI‐human knowledge screening, seven designed sequences showed transcriptional activity in plants, with two expressing stable proteins—demonstrating the first DNA‐RNA‐protein expression of LLM‐generated genes in plants and ...

MiR‐940 Suppresses Ferroptosis by Controlling Expression of Key Regulatory Genes
A CRISPR‐based screening identified miR‐940 as a critical suppressor of ferroptosis in cancer. By coordinating the downregulation of pro‐ferroptotic genes with the upregulation of GPX4, miR‐940 establishes a regulatory network that protects against ferroptosis and correlates with poor clinical outcomes in distinct cancer entities.

A brain‐targeted nanoparticle enables delivery of a therapeutic nanobody (Nb.29E9) that inhibits pathogenic GSK3β signaling. This intervention restores AMPK/mTORC1/TGFβ homeostasis, attenuates neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, and promotes long‐term functional recovery after ischemic stroke.

We are interested in creating a universal grammar structure, so that learning languages becomes a much easier task than it is now. We obviously cannot dream of having all languages on earth adopting this universal grammar, so that this is at most for those languages that are associated with our occidental style of writing.

Categorical Acquisition: Parameter-Setting in Universal Grammar
Two triggering models of parameter-setting, the Hierarchical Acquisition model endorsed by Baker (2001, 2005) and Wexler’s (1998) Very Early Parameter Setting model, are compared with Yang’s (2002, 2004) Variational model.
