Autonomous Ships 2022, 2022
Legislation is often mentioned as a barrier to the development of autonomous and/or unmanned ships. This paper examines whether the laws on safe manning of ships is currently a bottleneck in a gradual reduction of crew sizes through the analysis of data on safe manning and actual manning for 210 cargo and passenger ships.

Unmanned and low-manned transport has increasingly been studied this past decade. While there have been successful trials for autonomous navigation, unmanned cargo ships are not commercially available yet. First, this dissertation investigates how changes to a ship’s systems and organizational structure can affect the crew’s size and composition. Then,

In this chapter, the implications for the rules on manning are analyzed, i.e., how the development of periodically unmanned ships may affect the regulation of seafarer’s medical fitness and maritime training requirements, as well as the composition, size, and working hours of the crew.

Communication architecture for an unmanned merchant ship
2013 MTS/IEEE OCEANS - Bergen, 2013Unmanned ships is an interesting proposal to implement slow steaming and saving fuel while avoiding that the crew has to stay on board for very long deep-sea passages. To maintain efficiency and safety, autonomy has to be implemented to enable the ship to operate without requiring the SCC to continuously control the ship. Communication between ship and

Unmanned Ship Path Planning Based on RRT
2018Path planning is a task of primary importance for unmanned ship, but current algorithms are complex and inefficient. In this paper, we propose a Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree algorithm (RRT) for path planning of unmanned ship, which can obtain an asymptotically optimal path planning in limited time.

Off Ship Measurement of Ship Air Wakes Using Instrumented Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
32nd AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 2014This paper details an innovative method for measuring and investigating off ship air wakes that develop during the operation of naval vessels in common underway wind conditions. Wind currents, both naturally occurring and those resulting from ship motion, can create ship air wakes that make operation of rotary wing aircraft in the vicinity of the ship ...

Unmanned boat design for Challenges and verification of unmanned surface ship intelligent navigation
2018 IEEE 8th International Conference on Underwater System Technology: Theory and Applications (USYS), 2018This paper designs a small unmanned ship with infrared sensing and intelligent tracking ability according to the requirements of the National College Marine Vehicle Intelligent Navigation Competition. Firstly, the hardware configuration is introduced.
