The urachus is a vestigial remnant of embryonic life. It extends from the apex of the bladder toward the umbilicus. In the fetus the urachus is a hollow tube which attaches the bladder to the allantoic stalk. At birth the urachus descends with the bladder and comes to lie in the midline directly over the apex of the bladder.

A Very Large Patent Urachus Manifesting as an Umbilical Cord “Cyst” and Obliterating Postnatally
Journal of ultrasound in medicine, 2020A patent urachus can be suspected by prenatal ultrasound (US). Traditionally, surgical excision has been recommended for postnatal management. Here we describe a case of a neonate with a very large patent urachus and subsequent postnatal obliteration ...

SUMMARY Two further cases of urachal carcinoma are added to the 76 already reported in the English literature. An important factor contributing to the poor prognosis appears to be inadequate excision of the tumour at the time of partial cystectomy.

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Arising From a Low-Grade Mucinous Neoplasm of the Urachus
AJSP: Reviews and Reports, 2019Urachal mucinous tumors range from low-grade lesions traditionally called cystadenomas to frankly invasive mucinous adenocarcinomas. Occasionally, they can lead to the syndrome of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP).

Abstract 1.1. These rare or unusual tumors of the urachus are accompanied by symptoms of hematuria, dysuria, a low abdominal mass and sometimes mucus in the urine. 2.2. A tumor is seen in the upper part of the bladder. 3.3. The treatment is radical surgical removal. Endovesical treatment is not advised. This tumor does not respond to irradiation.
