The 5T Paradox of Triclosan: From Toiletries to Toxic Trash, a Growing Threat to Humanity

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Triclosan (TCS) persists as a contaminant of concern in the Anthropocene, despite regulatory actions. Environmental dissemination continues through wastewater effluents, biosolid application, and improper disposal practices. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence regarding triclosan's environmental fate, transformation pathways ...

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis and Long COVID susceptibility in chronic kidney disease

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
This study investigated gut microbiota dysbiosis and its association with Long COVID susceptibility in 224 hemodialysis patients. We found that 35.3% of patients developed Long COVID, characterized by neurological symptoms and elevated inflammatory markers, accompanied by significant gut microbiota alterations including enriched proinflammatory taxa ...

Distinct microbiome profiles on vaginally inserted polypropylene midurethral mesh slings compared to vaginal, urinary, and skin microbiomes

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology
Midurethral slings are widely used in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women. However, little is known about the microbiomes that develop on these implants, their relationship to the urinary and vaginal microbiomes, or their potential role

Gut microbiota dysbiosis in the inflammatory pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates how gut dysbiosis drives diabetic retinopathy through the gut‐retina axis, a process unfolding in three interconnected stages. First, in the gut, a decrease in beneficial bacteria and an increase in pro‐inflammatory taxa compromise the intestinal barrier, causing a “leaky gut” that allows LPS to translocate into the ...

Exploring Childhood Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and the Microbiome—A Systematic Review

open access: yesLife
Pediatric lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are influenced by age and coexist with nocturnal enuresis (NE) and bladder-bowel dysfunction (BBD). Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common and linked to LUTS, though the causal relationship remains ...

Safety, Efficacy, and Mechanism of Action of Budesonide in Rhinitis and Rhinosinusitis: A Systematic Review

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Budesonide is a corticosteroid with unique pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties that has been a frontline treatment for patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) since the 1990s. As research on budesonide continues to produce new insights, our aim was to synthesize recent investigations and ...

Skin microbiome modulation induced by probiotic solutions

open access: yes, 2019
Background: The skin is colonized by a large number of microorganisms, most of which are beneficial or harmless. However, disease states of skin have specific microbiome compositions that are different from those of healthy skin.

Cortisol concentrations in hair are biomarkers of health status and seasonal change, but not urbanisation, in wolves

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wolves have reclaimed much of their former range in Europe, including areas with a high human footprint, yet the physiological impacts of human‐associated stressors remain poorly understood. We first examined methodological factors affecting hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in wolves by using a ‘shave/re‐shave' design to assess hair growth rate and ...

Integrating large mammalian herbivores into Dynamic Global Vegetation Models: Status and next steps

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Zoogeochemistry, the study of how animals influence elemental cycling within ecosystems, bridges the fields of zoology, ecology and biogeochemistry. Yet, most terrestrial ecosystem models, especially Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVMs), remain largely plant‐centric
